Hi all, im looking to build my own pc rather than buying one to save some cash. Any ideas of a not too expensive chip and motherboard? I was looking at a 5i-2500k but am not too sure what motherboard to go for and don't want too spend much but don't want anything to crap either.

Check out hardware-revolution.com . I used that website to build my latest pc. The author of the website does a good job splitting our various configuations based on your budget and what the purpose of the pc is. That way, you can get the best bang for your buck.0

Just make sure that whatever board you get has the correct socket for the processor you want, and that the size matches your current case or the one that you're planning to buy.

More into IT support and repairs but built a few gaming rigs - but don't advertise custom builds. The other year built one on the original Sandybridge i5 2600k which worked out really well .
You do get to a certain stage when the speed of the cpu is irrelevant and and the graphics card is more important and some cards are suitable for certain types of games/publishers.
I usually do tons of research before buying. The motherboard plays a small part in the speed but not as much as cpu/gpu. Difficult to buy a really bad one - you pay for extra features ease of overclocking. Good brands MSI, Asus - Asrock

One other thing - you may not save money doing it yourself though.

Zalman Z9 Plus Midi Tower Case
Asus P8Z77-V LX Motherboard
Intel i5-3570K
Corsair 8GB 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 Vengeance Memory
Sapphire HD7850 2GB
LG GH22NS 22x SATA DVDRW Drive
Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB HDD
OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W
Windows 7 64 Bit
Had no trouble putting together and evreything work perfectly first time (well after i had remembered to press the PSU switch on!)
Runs nice and quiet too. Makes my xbox look very poor indeed. 0 -

Very shiny! I built our last two computers, and it's very satisfying when it all plugs in nicely. I used Newegg for all the components. The only trouble is having to be your own customer service. Something goes wonky? To the Internet for answers!0

Throw a SSD in there.....At least for the OS. If you can afford it buy big enough for everything. You won't regret it.0 -
^ Install your OS on the SSD, and any programs that take a while to load. Don't use it for file storage. It'll reboot so fast...0
