Hi there.
I am 24 years old and have been dealing with PCOS since I was a sophmore in high school. I am now trying to start a family with my husband and we are currently seeing a specialist because nothing is seeming to work. I have always tried dieting but it seems like when I am trying to control my eating that is when it's in my mind the most and can't help but to binge. I have been reading a lot about Metaformin, my doctor hasn't recommended it to me yet. Just wondering if you that are on it think that is the way that I should go and ask my doctor to put me on it? I just started seeing this physician, she has been putting me on Provera to help me get a monthly period. The doctor I saw before that had me on crinone gel and chlomid. I am a full out PCOSer, I don't get my period, i have ALL of the syptoms. SO advice please, Metaformin...yes or no? :)

Metformin is more for insulin resistance than ovulation/period control. It all depends on whether you're insulin resistant and need it. Your doctor should be able to tell you that with a simple blood test. If you need to, talk to an endocrinologist who can help you.

nornas I might have to disagree with you on that I was diabetic before I began to lose weight and now am off all my diabetic meds even Metformin, but when i went to talk to my dr she put me on a low dose of Metformin because she said that it does help you conceive

nekol i would def bring it up with your dr you never know it might just be what you need

Oo and just to add I have now had my period on my own the and even managed to ovulate :) am not sure if it bc of the metformin and the weight loss but they seem to have helped

I am taking Metformin to regulate my cycles and help me ovulate. When I was on 1000 mg daily, I was not getting my period but when it was increased to 2000 mg daily, I started getting it and have been between 4-8 weeks now, better than never getting it like I was!

Ok. I went through fertility treatment so I know the toll it can take. If you are significantly overweight it is VERY likely that you are insulin resistant. Your doctor can do a blood test to figure this out. Provera will likely induce a bleed however this is not a period. It does not correct the problem but the symptom of not bleeding and cleaning out your uterus. It will give you a withdrawal bleed by mimicking the hormone drop that causes people to have their period. Metformin has the potential to aid in fixing your insulin levels which relate to your other hormone levels and aid in your getting pregnant or at the very least regulating your cycle. Metformin also curbed my carb cravings and binge cravings.
Metformin is also recommended (though its controversial) for the first 13 weeks of pregnancy to help prevent miscarriage. Stats suggest that up to 75% of PCOSers miscarry in the first trimester (I did). Once you do get pregnant please have them place you on a vaginal progesterone suppository to support the pregnancy.
PM me if you have any other questions. I am a wealth of knowledge on this topic.
    GOOD LUCK!

I agree with the previous reply, I had my two boys with a fertility specialist, nd they gave me metformin for the first 13 weeks and progesteron suppositoires, I got pregnant again last year and my current doctor did not want to give them to me because they were not necesary, but I requested them until I got them. My levels were really low and I could have had a misscarge, but I manage to get them and now I have a gorgeous 5 month baby girl. Good luck!

My doctor finally gave me metformin...and I started taking it 3 days ago. Just 500mg for right now but in two weeks I'm onto 1000mg. I hope I have success stories like you all have shared with me :)

Great news, they start you off on a low dose because of some of the side effects it can cause, I was lucky and didn't get any side effects. Good Luck hun
