wheat allergy, not Celiac's

Hello everyone! I just started with MFP yesterday so I'm a total newbie. I do NOT have Celiac's. I've never had stomach problems from eating gluten, it doesn't make me sick or give me headaches. But I do have an extreme wheat allergy. The way I explain it to most people is that it is like a peanut allergy. I have to carry an EPI for it and have had a brush with death from it a few times. Needless to say, I have been gluten free a little over a year (last time I had any was Thanksgiving 2012. I had some Pillsbury cinnamon rolls for breakfast and about an hour later I was in the ER.) Anyways, the point of this post...does anyone else have a severe allergy to wheat that isn't Celiac's?? I've never met anyone else and have never really heard of it before. It would be nice to know someone else has this problem and I'm not just a total weirdo

Welcome to the group
I have Celiacs, not a wheat allergy, but I have heard of it before, you're not alone out there!0 -
whew, that's good to know! Its been really hard adjusting for me. I don't miss bread and I don't really miss cookies, cakes, cupcakes, etc. The hardest part is going to parties or when people bring food to the office and there is nothing I can eat. I actually have nightmares that I'm stuck somewhere with absolutely nothing I can eat!0

I, too, have a wheat allergy, but mine comes in the form of a bad cough or asthma. I have been (or tried to be) wheat free since April 2012. For years I couldn't lay down flat to sleep at night because of a severe cough. My mother used to coat me with Vicks when it got so bad it was disturbing everyone else. I do know that there are more severe reactions and I'm very sorry you have it. You really have to be extra vigilant. Good luck!0

I seem to be sensitive in the GI track. Upon eating wheat, tummy swells up, uncomfort gas pains, irregular bm. It sucks it you accidentially get glutened. I don't miss the wheat, I do miss beer. sigh.0

I'm allergic to gluten and for 4 years thought it was gluten intolerance but as i didn't cut it out completely I became ill on a a monthly basis by smaller and smaller amounts making me book an appointment to find out if i had coeliac and before i even got the results back i had to stop eating things with gluten as i was swelling and the tingling had turned to burning.
The night after I stopped eating things on purpose i was really ill and started to get scared and when i woke in the morning my forhead ,under my eyes, neck, under my chin and and lips has swollen. Not that it was clear to anyone else but i saw it straight away.
It scared me a lot that day and was terrified of bread and scared of nearly all foods for a while after that.
I have to rinse or wash my hands every time i touch or think i have touched anything containing wheat or gluten cause it gives my face a burn that is intense some times and swells my lips a tiny bit and gives me a burning rash under my bottom lip, chocolate and modified starches also makes my very itchy as well.
I have to take anti-histamines if i get these symptoms but I still become ill after a build up of contamination.
Since realising i'm allergic it have come to my attention that several things that happened to me over the years are all to related and that i have always been allergic and it have build up more and more as i got older getting worse and more ill,it really does make me wonder what would of happened if i ignored the signs. I think i would of ended up in hospital.0 -
Thanks for sharing everyone! If I have wheat I break out in hives all over my body and sometimes I'll get anaphylaxis (throat closes up.) I've passed out and blacked out and had to be hospitalized at least 10 times. Since realizing what I was allergic to I haven't had any more reactions thank god but it took a good 3 years for me to figure out it was wheat causing the reactions. The whole thing is just frustrating, as I'm sure you understand, because since we weren't born with the allergy we know what we're missing! I hate having cookies and pastries shoved in my face and then people saying "oh, sorry, forgot you can't eat that. sucks for you"0

I know others who do. I have other allergies that do cause anaphylaxis, so I get it!0

I have a diagnosed wheat allergy, I react by coughing, wheezing, and gagging, I do have to carry an epi pen as my doctor said it's a matter of time (or exposure) before I develop to an anaphylactic reaction.
I know exactly where you're at, I was diagnosed three years ago, I'm still struggling to stay wheat free (just got glutened last week at a restaurant because when the cook was told to remake my wrap because he didn't make it GF, I'm pretty sure all he did was dump the filling in a GF wrap and send it back out, ended up having to leave work) I still have people who try to give it to me stuff, and they just don't get it.0 -

Same here. Red wine will do that to me - even the slightest, diluted or even "cooked" amount - is NOT good for me!
Just have to avoid it at all costs.... once was enough for me!0 -
My friend (she's on here too as Monicalosesweight) has a wheat allergy. I am not sure that she's a celiac cuz she doesn't seem to get the major digestive upset issue, but she get HORRIBLE, painful, itchy skin rashes from eating it.0

I am Celiac, I use to vomit all the time and the doctors told me that I had heart burn. Anyway I have been gluten free for 3 years with no vomiting.
I would cut someone for a Krispy Kreme donuts.
I feel like I am allergic to everything else, mold, lotions, cotton, pet dander, pollen, oxygen, sun tan lotion, and the whole state of Florida. I think the list of what I am not allergic to is shorter.
Beer, yum. Bards and Dogfish has a great Gluten Free beer.0 -
A friend of mine has a wheat allergy - she has to carry an epipen with her at all times. They also think she may have coeliacs but cannot test her for it as she cant have gluten.0

It seems to be a common thing that if someone is allergic to wheat/gluten they have other allergies as well. I also have a severe allergy to all NSAIDS, so I can't take Ibuprofen, Advil, Aspirin, Aleve, etc. That's probably worse than the wheat for me because I have chronic pain and can't take anything for it. I also get migraines if I have too much caffeine, so no coffee or tea, and only limited amounts of chocolate.0

The theory is that the damage that gluten causes to your gut allows larger food protein molecules to get into your blood, where they are not supposed to be, so your body responds by trying to fight the invaders. It seems to be a common thing that if someone is allergic to wheat/gluten they have other allergies as well. It seems that whether it is Celiac disease or wheat allergy, no 2 people have the same symptoms... I have celiac but didn't have symptoms as described by some... I had diarrhea and weight loss and pain in the lower left side.....I had a stomach biopsy for diagnosis....I guess I am lucky that I didn't have more.....Sorry for those that do...0
