Adventure Race

My husband and I are training for an Adventure Race the end of April. I am curiouse if any one has done one and if you have any tips?

It is 10 miles of Running/Orienteering, 5 Miles Kayaking and 14 Miles mountain biking.

Do most people bring a pair of running shoes and another for riding or kayaking? I dont want to be running 10 miles in soggy shoes after I come off the river.
What are some light weight/good ways to keep spare socks or shoes dry inside your backpack?
Any gear suggestions that are out of the ordinary?

Thanks

  • Hey! I've done several ARs and think they are the funnest thing on this planet! First thing, expect to run in wet, muddy shoes. I'm not saying you can't bring another pair, but mostly it's more trouble than its worth. I don't think you will see many people doing it. ARs are not like Tri's. The running/paddling/biking is all mixed up. You may ride 3-4 miles finding check points, then drop the bike and run for a while. The paddling is usually all done at the same time.

As far as gear goes, bring a camelbak or something similar. They have pockets and bungees for gels and food. I highly suggest not to bring any fuel bars that are coated in chocolate - MESSY! Bring a super larger ziplock for the map and directions. They sell special map cases at outfitter stores that can be clipped to you. Bring a writting utensil also.

For the race itself, don't be afraid to be adventurous with the map! Find the shortest routes to places, go off the main path. These races are won (or not lost) by navigation!!

Dang, now I need to go sign up for one!
