Chik-fil-A Hate

I posted a note on the food section posting heading about people praising Chik-fil-A and informed them that they contribute their profits to hate groups. Do any LGBT still go there? I do not. I can't support a chain that works directly against our interests. I'm new here, so maybe this topic was already covered when this was in the news. Just irks me that so many were praising the food and not caring about the LGBT issues this brings up.

Luckily we don't have that chain in Canada. It's not even an option here0

Ugh. I made the mistake of reading some of the replies to your post. Ugh ugh ugh :mad:0

Sorry I still go to Chick-Fil-A
They have the best chicken sandwiches on Earth.0 -
there's a reason we have an LGBT+ group. Stay off the main forums. Its not pretty out there.
I love chik-fil-a food too, but I won't give them my money Day. You can find recipes to mimic their food online though.0 -
Hmm interesting...I'll have to look those up, thanks0
-
Doesn't exist in the UK, but of course we know all about them now, having never heard of them before the news...0

Hah, I just searched the forums for posts on chik-fil-a, and this comment made me laugh because what else can ya do:
"I believe that same sex marriage is completely a lifestyle choice and that it's a sin. However, I don't hate LGBT people. Just like other sinners, like drunkards, liars, and stealers, I still treat them with respect."
Sigh. And I suppose that person "chose" to be straight, right?0 -

and they never ever ever sin either
I wish I knew what about that statement constitutes "respect" in their mind. Respectful behavior would be thinking it but saying nothing.0 -
Well, I guess I've been drunk, lied and stolen over the last few years. Maybe they're right about me :-o0

Yeah if you want to tie your food chain business to your religious beliefs in a destructive way, you don't get my money. It doesn't really matter how good the food is.0
-
I have seen them in the US, but have never gone.
I think what is really interesting is that this isn't really anything new, and yet people only came to the realisation about their beliefs in 2012. And, since Chick-fil-A, I have yet to see progress or organization in outing these hatemongering family businesses. HRC has some report cards - there are no Canadian resources that I know of that are similar.0 -

I find it interesting that fast food is more important than lifestyle to get healthy. Ashley Furniture in the States also has a hate on for LGBT groups and has fired people open to marriage equality. It is important to note. That a little bit of hatred goes along way. When you are warned of such hate groups it is our right to stand up as consumers and say this is not right. To cop out and say well they make really good this or that. Is okay because something is made with hate and not love. We need to look at the bigger picture. Just like companies that say I cannot afford to give my employees health benefits but I can give away 2 million pizza's that is okay. It is not okay. As consumers we have a large voice. We need to remind our politicians they are there to represent us and that hate is hate wrong is wrong. Sitting their saying their is nothing I can do. As I am afraid of not getting voted back into office is like giving a four year old a loaded hand gun and saying now don't shoot it.0 -
I *think* I get what you're saying, but maybe you could clarify? Its sort of reading like ...well. I 'm not sure what we're supposed to be telling our congress people in your scenario.
really the only thing we can ask the government to do is to make it so these organizations can't apply for tax exempt status. Which I THINK means you have to take away the 'advancement of religion' clause. Which, I'm personally all for but it becomes a much bigger debate.
Alternately, (this might be easier), request that they add 'disqualifiers' - so even if you qualify under 'advancement of religion' you are DISqualified if you are identifiable as promoting something that opposes one of the below. So like you get disqualified for working AGAINST eliminating discrimination even if you qualify under another clause.
It won't eliminate groups but it will disincentivize people to give them money over ANOTHER organization that does qualify and that will still help.

Relief of the poor, the distressed, or the underprivileged,
Advancement of religion,
Advancement of education or science,
Erection or maintenance of public buildings, monuments, or works,
Lessening the burdens of government,
Lessening of neighborhood tensions,
Elimination of prejudice and discrimination,
Defense of human and civil rights secured by law, and
Combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency.0 -
Yeah. Losing my $7 every few months isn't exactly gonna keep them from being hatemongers. Unfortunately.0

I got a message from Olivia -- a MFP Community Manager-- alerting me that my original message on the Food board responding to the people raving over how wonderful Chik-fil-A is, was a violation of the policy. I love how she signs it, "Peace." See below:

Huh. I suppose *technically* it's off-topic? I wonder if the people who posted bigoted comments later in the thread received similar letters.0

I'm afraid I'm new here and do not understand my violation. My intent was to inform people about a topic that is very important to me. I find the actions of that restaurant chain, Chik fil A, to be very offensive. The posting i commented on was basically a commercial supporting it. I felt My posting was respectful, polite, on topic, and I did not intend to invite any drama. I find your message to me odd and disturbing. I feel I am being censored because I spoke out on behalf of my civil rights.0 -

Ok this makes no sense. She says "If you had posted this as a new topic in the chit chat section, I would not have had the same response". Why would she not have responded to it in the chit chat section but she would in the actual LGBT SECTION????? It is totally related!!!! I gained weight because of the stresses that come along with being who I am. A group of people (chik fil a) is contributing to this by taking away my civil rights! This is totally related to my weight loss journey!0 -
The post (if I recall) was in the "food and nutrition" section; bluespongerun is just showing us what he posted there...I can't imagine any admins would have the gall to say "you can't post that" here????0

Olivia's comments and action are shameful and transparently homophobic. Her cited reason for deleting your post would seem to be a thin veil for her personal feelings, as you were clearly not "Hi-Jacking, Trolling, or Flame-baiting." I note that the post introducing the completely out-of-left-field "anti-christian bigotry" claim is still there, despite Olivia's careful eye.
Even if the KKK baked the best cookies in the word, I wouldn't eat them, much less buy them. Likewise for Chik-fil-A. No matter how good it's supposed to be (for megacorp fast food), I could never get that foul taste of bigotry out of my mouth. And I certainly don't want my money to fund the very things I have worked to overcome.0 -
Uh, hang on. That's really, really not okay of the mod or whoever. A post about your thoughts on Chick-Fill-A in a thread about Chick-Fill-A isn't derailing or trolling. That's totally relevant. You're allowed to disagree, you're allowed your opinion.0

are you KIDDING?? i turned a body-shaming thread into a cat gif thread yesterday AND copped to that fact when i reported the OP and they didn't say jack squat to me! you were totally respectful and totally on topic. i might fwd that to Steven, in all honesty, b/c he's proven to be an ally in the past and i think Olivia was totally off base.0 -
The most generous interpretation I can make is that Olivia was just trying to get you to avoid turning a post about food into a post about politics, regardless of how linked they are.
Her attempt is ham-fisted and her justifications are poorly worded, no doubt. Accusing someone, who is already being made a victim of civil rights issues in a larger sense, of hijacking a thread is moronic.
She might as well have said, "Shut up, queer, and only speak when spoken to" but I doubt any of the mods would see it that way.0 -
A friend of mine got a pretty unfounded warning from olivia yesterday and had a talk with her about it - Olivia admitted that she's new and isn't quite sure of how to enforce what right now, and unfortunately that means she seems to be comign down on the side of being overly aggressive instead of risking being permissive.
Its ok if you want to message her and explain what you felt was wrong about it. She reversed my friends warning and apologized so I think she's just not very good at modding.0 -
WOW
Olivia is completely wrong on this topic!!!
When people say that chik fil a has a right to think what they want. sure that's true.
When they DONATE MONEY that goes to kill the gays in Uganda---- and people give them money. Those people are, in essence saying
"I don't care if my money goes to kill gay people." even if it's just one dollar.
You have a right to educate people about this. If they are that stupid to eat that food and not to care about gay people being murdered, then they are sick people... period end of story.0
