Competitive instructor or sore loser

Okay back ground on me. I power lifted for 12 years, was super strong. Quit for 12 years and started back a year ago. Also started
crossfit 2 months ago. I'm 6'3" 240 lbs. and 46 years old. The fitness gym that I work out at has its little clique groups of wanna be strong men and power guys. I always keep to myself and do my own thing but always get stares and you know the groups are talking about you when you lift.
I started crossfit because there wasn't any of that BS going on. They are supportive and I've made friends with all of them. I like it because its a great new sport that I would love to compete in, in a couple of years.
On to the story. Last night we had a asst. instructor that doesn't like power lifters. I always have problems with the cardio side of crossfit and he dogs me on this. Which I know I'll get better at it but at 240 my knees can't handle a lot of running. We did "Grace" last night – 30 Clean and Jerks for time – 135#/95# So I'm like thinking the will be an easy one. I just did my own thing and did it in 2:11 min. The main instructor was proud of me and I said that was an easy one for me. The smart *kitten* asst. was pissed cuz I squashed his time. I was like look dude, I don't say anything when you beat me in the cardio stuff, but lifting things is what I do. I don't brag, I'm very humble and willing to learn from this guy. But he is getting on my nerves and I may change to another box. He always has something smart *kitten* to say. I always worry about how I do not what others do. If he only knew that I didn't give it a 100% that would have really pissed him off.
Rant done, sorry guys, had to get that off my chest.

CF is loaded with alpha personalities, unfortunately. I would maybe have a chat with the head coach and see if he might talk to the guy, or pull that asst aside and have the discussion with him directly. It would suck to have to leave a box you are otherwise happy with because that guy is uncomfortable with his lifts and takes it out on you.0

I just keep to myself, I'm a gentle giant. But he is pissin me off and it took a while for me to find the right box. He is young and hasn't a clue about what kinda strength I have that I don't show. Being a former power lifter I've learned not to take anger out on someone, I take it out on the weights. I lift and workout for me and me alone. I don't need to prove anything at my age. I've been there and done that, but have always stayed humble. I'm not a show off, I just do my thing.0

I agree with divemunkey. You're gonna blow a gasket if you keep it bottled up. Plus the owner/coach will certainly want to know that his asst coach is driving away members.0

Definitively say something. Crossfit shouldn't be loaded with alphas per se, but leaders0

Not only that other people will get driven away too. Sadly people are people. Also as you are big they should not push your cardio as much as a slighter person. Your main coach should know and instill this, he should also know the reasons why.

Sux for you but why don't you pull him aside before a WOD and say something like 'dude, I think I got the lifting sorted but I am struggling with the cardio side of things, you seem to have this nailed - any suggestions'? This should be a non aggressive approach for him. Failing that, speak to your head coach - It would suck for you to leave just coz of this douche bag.0

I already have, the guy is young, naive, cocky and arrogant. I explained to him I'm not competing with him. Also talked to my friend the owner, he said the guy was jealous of my strength. I said I'm jealous of people with good cardio but that doesn't make me be mean to others. Maybe he needs to hit the weights and STFU. Maybe I need to compete against him...maybe thats what he wants.0 -
I say yes to competing against him. By doing that, and correcting his obnoxious behavior, by pointing out how it bugs you, you won't have to move gyms and you'll actually be helping a young guy.
I was young and stupid once. Perhaps you were too.0 -
I was humble when I was young, but was very competitive. Grew up military, my dad didn't put up with arrogance or bragging etc.0

Doesnt CF have max 1-2 rep days? Just crush the dude and don't even look his way. If he says something not constructive, just ignore the guy.0
-
Never know when that is, but he can't hang with me and the strength days. Thats what the problem is, he just handle it.0
-
Oh well, I guess he's not the biggest fish in his little pond after all.
I best he's scared that it will be easier for you to improve your cardio than it is for him to improve his lifts. LOL0 -
Thats what I think too.0
