Anyone have any good somewhat healthy places to eat around the area that we all might now know about? When we were in DC, we stopped by a great salad place called chop't, where they custom hand make your salad for you in front of you - kind of like a Subway style method or something but a lot lot better.... Unfortunately, they're only in NY and DC... hopefully someone can throw a gem out there like that though

When Eddie Met Salad is a salad place close to IUPUI campus, there are a few other locations around the north side of Indy.
I ate at Souplantation in San Diego and it was better than When Eddie Met Salad but this is a good option for Indy. Would love to know of more...0 -
I have been trying to find that just right place too! I love a little restaurant up by Broad Ripple called, SoBro Cafe. They make all of their food from scratch and use a lot of organic, gluten free, vegetarian type dishes. BEST baked sweet potato fries! But they are known for their crepes. : ) Good luck!0

McAllisters has a lite menu with calories listed on complete meal. I like it because I don't need to calculate or worry about hidden calories. I wish every place would do that and have low cal available.0

For good, locally-sourced, but not necessarily low-calorie food, try Pearl Bistro up by the Marsh on 86th & Ditch. It's not on the menu at the moment, but when they have the lamb bacon BLT, it's most definitely worth a splurge!

I second this place. Plus there are so many options for meat, toppings. I think I know where I will have lunch on Sunday!0 -
By the way, When Eddie Met Salad is closed on Sunday. I don't know for sure that all are, but I know the one by the pyramids is. : ( I went especially for a light lunch, and was most saddened!0

Panera is great, they have calories listed on the menus, the "You PIck Two" menu is loaded with good things that will fill you up but without a lot of calories. McAlisters is also another good one! Several chain restaurants like Applebees and O'Charley's are not working on a low-cal menu.0

I haven't been to Applebee's in a while, but don't they still have thoseWight Watcher selections on the menu? There used to be about six of them that were pretty good (and they had the calories listed)...0 -

They used to have this menu. It used to be called the under 500 calorie menu. They stopped doing it when people actually called them out on their calorie count. Maybe they still have a lite menu, but not sure about the calorie content in it. Its like eating Bologna thats 98% fat free, but theres still 20g of fat in it. :laugh:
When I go to Mcallisters I try to stay with the salads (dressing on the side) and a bowl of chili. I will get the potato with the chicken on it and not put butter or sour cream on it.0 -
bd's Mongolian Grill is located in Clearwater Crossing, it's similar to Stir Crazy. The raw food is set up like a salad bar, you choose protein, veggies and sauce then they cook it for you. They'll bring white or brown rice to the table (or both). I haven't been there in a while and don't hear many people talk about it but it's alway busy when I've been there.

If you're looking for more of a fine dining experience, check out Seasons 52 at Keystone @ The Crossing. Everything on their menu is less than 475 calories and absolutely delicious. Menu changes seasonally, they have really awesome flatbreads and salads. They also have little dessert indulgences that are shooters - just enough to get a little bit of a sweet treat. I agree about both Panera and McAllisters since you can look up their nutrition info online. I eat Qdoba a lot too, I love to get their kids naked burrito bowl (without the rice) - pretty decent on calories and protein-loaded.0

Both Applebee's and Chili's have lighter options with calorie counts on the menu. I had the sweet and spicy chicken at Chili's (chicken, rice, and steamed broccoli) and it was delicious!0

ok, I'm going to list my three favorite locally owned places to eat that I've found in central Indiana... None are really healthy at all, but they deserve some recognition, and I'm never going to give them up - I just do the best I can when I go there. Just save them for special rewards...

Hip/delicious - Bonge's Tavern - Perkinsville, IN - a bit pricier, but not horrible, and chef made food in the middle of nowhere - summer weekends tailgaiting prior to dining is almost required.. famous for Perkinsville Pork, Harger Duck among others.. I agree! When Eddie Met Salad is my choice! There is one on 96th Street and one in Carmel that I know of! They also have wraps as well, but the salads are delightful!

I've heard about Bonge's Tavern from a few coworkers and have yet to make it there. I have to set this as a goal to visit in 2013 being that it has come up again.
Naggie13 - try some green shakes. Since you make them with veggies and fruits its very lo-cal. The fiber content will help you feel fuller longer. You can also try protein shakes. There are some that are low in sugar or no sugar at all.
If you haven't made a green shake before it's a trial and error process. I finally figured out a recipe to my liking. There are tons online but I didn't care for all of the ingredients. I keep mine very basic - about 2 cups raw spinach, 1/3 c Almond milk, 2 or 3 small strawberries and 1/2 a banana. I have used frozen blue berries when I ran out of bananas. I change the fruit combo depending on what I have - I have used pineapple, mango, and raspberries. Also, I hate spinach. I can't eat it cooked or raw but I can drink it in a shake! :happy:0 -
We went to Mongolian BBQ last night for the first time and we loved it!! Lots of choices and on their website you can get the nutritional values. We will definitely go back.0

I really dont like having to limit myself to salads. They can be pretty high in calories depending on what you put on it. Add dressing and its even worse.
I've been enjoying Cracker Barrell. Most of their food items are in the database so its very easy to calculate calories. Being diabetic, I have to watch carbs too so its nice having all the information handy.
I've enjoyed the meatloaf platter with green beans, carrots and coleslaw a couple of times at just 472 calories (sometimes I even get a biscuit). That may be a high calorie meal for some of you but I tend to eat light during the day allowing me to have a more substantial evening meal. That prevents my liver from dumping sugar into my system over night and waking with a high blood glucose reading. It also stops me from snacking which was one of my biggest problems.0 -
Ivenhoe's is the best!!!! Our friends live out that way so we go there often... and the price is just right as well!!0

Maybe not as important as WHAT you eat, but HOW you eat: try eating your vegetables first, then your protein. Also, exchange a little protein for carbs at mid-day (I sometimes skip carb for lunch and have a small banana with a TBSP natural peanut butter for my afternoon snack, keeps the hungries away). Protein (chicken, turkey, fish, beef) takes longer for you to digest, therefore keeps you fuller longer, just be sure it is the last thing you eat (eating protein first is hard on the digestion).0
