If this is your first I caution you not to stock up on diapers before trying brands on your baby. My son was allergic to one brand, another we tried leaked ALL the time (that was actually pampers if I remember correctly) and it took us some trial and error to find diapers we liked. I love Kirkland (Costco brand) and Target diapers, but I know my friend hates Target b/c they don't fit her girls correctly. Seems like diapers would be more straight forward, but I promise you will wind up with a favorite brand after trying some out.0

totally depends on the kid!
From my experience, pampers work better for smaller butts and huggies are good for bigger butts0 -
Neither! I have never been able to get Huggies to not leak on my two boys. And we used Pampers almost religiously with our first, but they changed the formula with our second, so we ended up using the Target brand. We'll start with the Target brand with this little lady and see what works. Ditto the pp, you won't know what works until you try, so don't stock up!0
-
I loved Pampers little swaddlers - but as soon as that umbilical cord fell off we moved onto Up&Up (Target Brand).
Good luck!0 -
Like everyone else said....all depends on the kid. I did love Pampers while both of mine were newborns, as Huggies newborns always leaked on mine. Then as soon as they hit size 1 & 2 it was Huggies for mine. The cheaper brands never bothered my daughter. My son had baby eczema and he was sensitive to everything but Huggies.0

I love Pampers, the are worth the money. They never bother my son and they keep him dry!0

Pampers or Luvs. Luvs aren't as quality, but I have never had a problem with them leaking, and they are very cost effective. I did like the Huggies Natural brand, but with other versions I have problems with the tabs keep ripping off.0

We tried Luvs- leaked everywhere
Pampers worked best for us for newborns, but as they got older, we got Huggies or Pampers - whichever were on sale. I agree with the advice not to buy a bunch of the same brand of diaper before your baby is born. My sons were very long and terribly skinny. My SIL's daughter was long and chubby. We used very different brands.0 -
I agree not to stock up unless they are a great price but then keep your reciepts just in case, tape it to the front of the package. We were a huggies all the way seemed to work for us... although from the comments on new born pampers I may try I have very skinny children...0

We tried both (and more) and preferred Huggies for our girl. There's a kind of a flap inside the back at the top to help catch any leaks that may go in that direction. Pampers doesn't have that flap and my baby always had pee going up her back. We've switched from Huggies to the Kirkland brand. They are the same design and much cheaper. We still have some poop explosions (out the legs and up the back) but all of my mom friends have said that no matter what the brand, you're bound to have a leak/explosion at some point. When it happens to us it's usually because it's time to move up to the next size (or because someone *cough*DH*cough* put the diaper on too loose).
Anyway, definitely don't stock up until you know which brand you prefer!0 -
We tried pampers with my daughter as a newborn and the drymax they put in it gave her a horrible rash. (I know they don't put the drymax in newborn diapers anymore to my knowledge) To the point it was bleeding in spots and you could see the weave of the diaper in her skin. It was such an aweful experience for us and her that we will never go back to pampers, ever. We do use luvs now. They didn't work with her as a newborn, so we used huggies natural brand until she reached 15lbs and then the luvs seemed to fit her.0

Thanks for all the advice! Its crazy how many people have had such different experiences with the same brands!
I wasn't planning on stocking up! Just a box of new borns, size 1's and 2's.. In pampers is what I bought... Then if huggies are on sale i figured Id get one of each to try and see what I like better!
I have LOTS of friends and my sister and SIL due all with in a month or two of me, so I figured what I dont use/like ill pass along..
BUT when it works out to like 15 cents a diaper I figured why not! (I dont even know if thats a good price lol as im a first time mom)0 -
Yeah, it's trial and error.
We used Huggies Little Snugglers/Little Movers for a while. Eventually when Amazon Mom required payment for membership, I started buying at Costco, which sells Huggies Snug 'n Dry. I think I prefer them to the more expensive Little Movers!
I tried Pampers but never had a good experience. They always leaked on my son, and it didn't take much pee to do that. I think it was a matter of the fit.
I have bought Target diapers before and have generally been happy with them. However, I can usually do better buying Huggies at Costco, so I go that route. I was once in Target buying their diapers and ran into a friend with three young girls (two of whom are twins), and her husband's a doctor, so she can afford expensive diapers. She said, however, that Target diapers are a staple at her house! My SIL tried them and said they were fine on her daughter if she only peed or pooped, but not both - however the baby was having chronic diarrhea at the time, so I think that had something to do with it. (I know they use Huggies Snug 'n Dry regularly.)
I have otherwise tried Kirkland (Costco) brand diapers and hated them - the gel they use got all these little beads everywhere - so I returned them even after using 6 or 7 diapers out of the box (Costco will take almost anything back for a full refund, and I tried to give them a chance).
I also have used Publix (supermarket) diapers in a pinch. They're ok but need to be changed often, or there will be leaks. I sent them to my son's preschool and will never do that again because they don't do diaper checks often enough for them not to leak. As such I have the rest of the box at home for use on the weekends when we are not out and about.
Then there are overnight diapers - I used Huggies Overnites and HATED them at first. I actually complained to Kimberly-Clark, who sent me a coupon for a free jumbo pack of diapers as an apology. I then tried them again later because my son was having leaks every night no matter what I used, and they worked great - so now we use them every night! I wrote Kimberly-Clark back and said I had tried Overnites again and was happy with them, sort of a retraction of my first letter
I was told by someone, however, that Babies 'R Us carries Fisher Price overnight diapers that are supposedly really good. I'm not sure if they're still sold anymore, since I've never looked. I've also been told that Target overnight diapers are good, but I've never found them, so if you see them, I'd suggest giving them a try.
This time around I have some leftover Huggies in smaller sizes (I think size 1 and size 2), but otherwise I am keeping an open mind in case Pampers turns out to be the better bet. I'll probably start off with Huggies, though, since that's what I've been happy with and because I can buy them at Costco. (Costco only sells Huggies Snug 'n Dry and Kirkland brand diapers - no Pampers.)0 -

I'm surprised to hear this - I've never tried Luvs, but that's because I was warned by several moms that they are horrible. I'm glad you were ok with them, though, because they definitely are cost-effective! In a pinch I've been able to buy Publix (supermarket brand) diapers, but if I had the chance to go to Target I'd just get the Up & Up. I'm not sure how they compare to Luvs, price-wise.0 -

Yup, basically. You're eventually going to have a blowout or two regardless of how good your diapers are. Consistent leaks on otherwise good diapers are usually a sign that you need to move up a size. However, I have talked to friends who didn't know that you need to point boys down before you close the diaper, so I thought I'd mention that! I also had to remind my husband constantly to make sure the elastics on the legs weren't tucked in and stuck towards his butt - basically I run my fingers along the backs of his thighs every time I change his diaper to make sure that the elastics are placed so that anything (especially poop) will stop there and not leak out the legs.0 -

Just don't buy too many newborn diapers - you'd be surprised how fast they outgrow them and need size 1s! I think we went through size 1 pretty quickly, too, and were in size 2s for a while. But if you have a bigger baby, you may not be able to get away with newborns for more than a couple of days, if that. I think we used them for about a week before switching up to size 1s.0 -

My 2 SIL's really liked Luvs, for their boys and girls. We tried a few times in different sizes and they always leaked horribly and had to be changed so frequently that they ended up costing more than the expensive brands.0 -
Ya I just got a little box of new borns, then a box of 136 size 1's and 120 size 2... All was like 50 bucks.. AND bonus airmiles lol0

Not sure about where you're delivering, but the hospital that I deliver at gives you several samples as well, so take those as freebies to see if you like how they fit! And I'm probably more biased to Target because I live in Minneapolis and since they are a Minneapolis company, I have roughly 4 or 5 within a 5 mile radius of my house specifically one about 1/4 of a mile from my house, so we're there every single day and it's convenient for me and I like to support "local"0

I live in Canada! Target isn't here yet! They are just started to build a couple in the city I live in! One of which will be walking distance from my house! Im so excited! I hope they carry everything the American Targets carry!
Everytime im there I spend alot of time shopping at Target lol! I love it there0 -
Well if it gets there in time, they have a fairly decent maternity section as well!0

I use pampers at home! Huggies have always given me problems. the tabs rip off so easliy. when you are trying to rush and change a wiggle worm, you need a sturdy diaper.
My boys are with my mom while I am at work and she uses Coscto brand on them during the day. the diaper has to be changed more offten becasuse it does not keep the pee off of them. But they never leak.0 -
I have used all of the above...lol. We loved the Newborn Luvs, but once he got into 1s we didnt like them, I have heard a lot with the pampers giving kids rashes because of the green line on them, but we never had an issue. I mainly get pampers cruisers, but we always used the snug and dry ones at night and they worked fantastic! I buy huggies occasionally too and actually like both . Though snug and dry wise I like the pampers because they are a little more flexible for our little man. I just take what I can get because we get diapers bought for us for his birthday and Christmas and I honestly have had Costco brand, target brand, etc and havent had an issue. I guess I have just been lucky! We will see how it goes once the girls come though!0

Started out with Pampers swaddlers which worked great. Just recently switched to Huggies (my daughter is 15 months, size 4) on a fluke. The store was out of Pampers size 4. I love the Huggies brand! Pampers didn't seem to fit as well once my daughter was about 14 months. Leaked all the time. Have had no issues with Huggies leaking.0

With my son, we first used Huggies Little Snugglers (Newborn size & Size 1) and the majority of them leaked horribly when he would pee. He was peeing through to his clothing about 3-4 times a day.
We also tried Luvs Ultra Leakguards. These weren't too bad. He leaked through on occasion...maybe once or twice a week. For the price, I would buy them again.
We also have used Pampers Swaddlers and so far they are my absolute favorite. I haven't had a single problem with them so far. They are pricey, but worth it.0 -
Pampers Swaddlers are hands-down the best I've found. They don't leak unless they are completely full, and they fit great. DO NOT buy much in Newborn size for diapers. They grow out of them way too fast. If you're going to stock up, stock up on Size 1, 2, and 3's.
We had a terrible time with Huggies little snugglers leaking, especially the newborn size. My son would just pee right through them all over himself and everywhere. Size 1 Huggies were too small also.0 -
Pampers make my baby's skin really red (and I worry he is sensitive to whatever formula they use). My friend's daughter got a really bad rash from them. Huggies always seem to leak. I prefer diapers from The Honest Company. You order them online. They're organic and come in really fun prints. Also, if you do the bundle (which comes with free wipes), I feel like it ends up being the same cost (or less) than either Huggies or Pampers. Although, I live in NYC where everything has a crazy markup, so ordering online just about always seems cheaper to me.0

Huggies leak like nobody's business, at least for my baby. I love Pampers!0
