Hi guys,
Week 5 challenge from Monday 4 February to Sunday 10 February (ends just in time for Valentines Day choccies):
 So nice we're doing it twice!!!
After having a few requests for another food challenge I've decided to run with the no sugar challenge again but this time we're also including 'limited' sugar/sweets.
You can go as soft core or as hard core as you'd like, just try to change the amount of sugar/sweets you have this week. Not only will your waistline thank you but you will take years off the way you look!!
Benefits for cutting out sugar:
Reduce diabetes risk
Weight control
Stable energy
Prevent tooth decay
Other more comprehensive reasons: http://www.priyoaustralia.com.au/articles/health/78893-why-you-should-stop-eating-sugar.html
Ways to cut back your sugar intake:

So come in, say how you plan to cut back/eliminate sugar and sweets and let's get this started!!!

This is such a great challenge! I really enjoyed pushing myself last time we had this challenge, and although it IS difficult, it's also totally worth it! Count me in. I plan on being more on the "hardcore" side of the fence, but will definitely be including "healthy" sugar such as fruit.0

Hey donaines, thanks for joining!!!
I plan on eating a bit of fruit as well and avoiding all the normal haunts - baskin robbins, sweets aisle in the supermarket etc. I think the hardest part will be to remember not to touch my chocolate milk (Love chocolate milk with a passion!!) If I can do that, I can do ANYTHING!!0 -
I cut out candy last month.. as in ZERO pieces of candy which was really rough for me. When this group got rolling in Jan, I misread that challenge and took it as an all month long one, lol. I did without any sort of candy or sweets from 1Jan up until the last couple days. I think I made it until 29Jan. I have always had the habit of going into the gas station to get a drink or something and get one of those little chocolate covered cherries at the counter, or maybe just an Andes mint, etc.. When I say going into the gas station, I mean like maybe once every other week.. we're not talking daily here.
Even still January was hard for me.
I'll commit to limited sweets with this challenge, as I don't eat sugary things anymore. I use Truvia in tea and eat low sugar options in food wherever possible.0 -

How's everyone going? Any temptations? Got over them?
My husband sent me a message if we can have apple pie and custard for dessert. Normally I'd be - bring it on!! This time I was like 0_o - you've got to be kidding me right?!! He's also not having any sugar and I think that he was delirious from the lack of it!! lol!0 -
Check out this page guys: http://www.sarahwilson.com.au/2011/10/yes-chocolate-nut-balls-so-healthy-you-can-eat-em-for-breakfast/
What do you think of making something like this during the challenge to satisfy cravings? Yay or Nay?0 -
Happy hump day!!! How are you guys going? Any cravings?
I found a pretty good recipe that I thought to share:
Sugarless muffins
2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2 large eggs
1 cup unsweetened apple sauce
1/4 cup light oil (sunflower, corn)
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries (I'm going to subsitute banana instead)
1. Prepare muffing cups with oil or use paper or foil liners
2. Preheat oven to 425F
3. In a large bowl, stir together flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt. Set aside
4. In a small bowl beat eggs until lemony; then stir in applesauce and oil.
5. Pour egg mixture inot the dry ingredients and beat until well mixed.
6. Gently stir in blueberries
7. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full
8. Bake at 425F for 30 mins or until nicely browned - serve warm or cold.
Per muffin: 110 calories
Hope you enjoy and if you have your own recipe to share feel free :drinker:0 -
thanks for the recipe I will have to try that this weekend. My kids love muffins and bake goods so I always have something in the house I am trying to cut their sugar other than natural sugars down as much as possible.0

No problem at all. I made a batch last night but wasn't feeling to eat anything else after dinner so I'll take one to work today and let you guys know how they came out (made mine with banana)0

I just saw this challenge and I'm happy to report that I've been doing it! Woo hoo!!! I've limited by pop intake to once a week (usually on Friday or Saturday when my hubby and I have our date day), other than that its water during the week. No sweets, nothing at home and nothing at work. I split half a chocolate chip cookie with a co worker on Monday and made sure I had the smaller half0

Proud to say that I had a regular non-fat latte today---no sugary syrups needed! It wasn't hard to pass up either, which was nice. Last time I did this challenge, the cravings really set in around day four so I anticipate these sort of small challenges will get harder for me, but at least I'm off to a good start!
Some good motivation: when I cut down sweets before for only a week, it made any dessert or sugary thing taste REALLY sweet after I went back to eating them, which went a long way on helping me feel satisfied with very SMALL portions of these treats. In the end, this challenge can have benefits lasting far beyond one week!0 -
You guys are really going really excellent!!
I had a bit of a slip up today - after being extra careful with everything this week, I went out to lunch at a resturant on campus with some coworkers where I ordered the spring roll. Ended up eating only 2 out of the 3 because I thought that it tasted a bit oily. Got back to the office, pulled up MFP to enter my calories, checked the restuarant menu only to see that one of the sauces that came with the spring rolls was chili confit JAM!!!! I never would have thought that it was jam seeing as it was hot and spicy. So upset with myself for not realising or paying attention. Ah well learning curve, next time there's something presented I'm going to ask what it is!!
On another note - finally tried the unsweetened muffins I made....sorry but - YUCK!!! I think that I'll do without them and just have fruit or something savoury!0 -
That's frustrating! Who knew that a sauce for a spring roll would be jam?? Oh well---I don't even really count that as a "slip up" because you didn't seek out the sugary thing on your own...it just snuck in under your defenses!
On a different note, I found a decent recipe in the forums here for something called Two Ingredient Oatmeal "Cookies". All it takes is 1 banana
1/2 cup quick cook oats
You mash the banana, add the oats, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake for 10-15 min or until the "cookies" are slightly firm to the touch. Yields: four "cookies" (or more if you make them small).
I made these since there is no sugar other than what is naturally in the banana (and I would eat the banana by itself anyway), and they turned out pretty good! Not exactly a substitute for the real thing, but a nice treat. When the week is up I might try them again with some added raisins or chocolate chips, but since both of those have added sugar I didn't want to put them in this time! Thought I would share in case anyone is interested.0 -
Thanks for the wonderful, kind words donaines!! I just couldn't believe that it was jam...I thinkt hat the chili part was so hot I couldn't even identify that it was actually meant to be sweet as well!! I'll stop beating myself up.
Thanks as well for the cookie recipe, I think that I'm going to have to give that one a go, sounds yummy!!! I wonder if I should add just a hint of vanilla extract as well to give it some added flavour....hmmmm.....0 -
Whoooo, Sunday at last and last official day for me (even though I've made the decision to carry on no sugar for the rest of the month). How are you all going with the challenge?
Last night I had dinner with a few friends at one of their homes and one brought along an extra decadent looking chocolate cake! I'm quite proud to say that I was not even tempted to eat the cake. I had some green grapes for dessert and was quite happy with just having that.0
