...when you were diagnosed?

...when you got pregnant for the first time?

My husband and I are beginning to look at a time frame for starting a family and I'm starting to come up with a lot of questions. This is the first community I've joined that addresses this topic and I am exited to get some mentorship! Thanks!

I was 24 when I was diagnosed. That was last July. We haven't tried for kids yet but I had one (unfortunately unsuccessful) unplanned pregnancy in the past. I think we'll start actively trying in the next year or two, but I'd like to get to a point first where I feel like my PCOS is controlled and at least not getting worse.

Best of luck! There is a lot of help out there. I think it's important to remember that everyone is different, and it usually takes people a while to figure out what works for them. Sometimes there are numerous 'failures' before success. Don't give up if it takes some time. We are here to support you!

I was 16 when I got diagnosed. It was a total coincidence because I think my doctor just thought I was a fat girl who liked food and was lazy. But I wasn't. I did sports, theater, and ate a LOT less than what someone who weighed 250 pounds should eat. I worked at the library and a girl there had lost 70 pounds and said that she had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and they had put her on a medication and special diet and the weight started falling off. I knew I had it. I went and got my blood tested and BOOM.

I was 25 when I got pregnant. I don't ovulate on my own and do NOT bleed on my own. Ever. I was put on Femara and ovulated and was pregnant on my first cycle. However after hearing the heartbeat the pregnancy ended at 9 weeks.

I wasn't diagnosed until earlier this year (at age 28). There were some hints along the way (slightly irregular periods and acne) before I started the pill at age 20. I came off of the pill in May so we could start a family and then the periods were getting fewer and farther between. I have it all: polycystic ovaries, secondary amenorrhea, and high testosterone <said in a deep voice>. I have a BMI of 19.9, so not overweight.

We have been trying to conceive since mid-May, so about 9 months. At the end of January, after a medically induced period, I took 50mg of Clomid on cycle days 3-7. I'm willing to do up to three rounds with my gynecologist, and then will go to a reproductive endocrinologist.

You could get pregnant your first try, or go through a year of trying and then seek medical intervention, or it could take a while. Your preferred time line will likely no align with your body. Generally doctors would like to see you after trying for a year on your own before you can get any assistance. My advice is always start now! ;) Good luck!
  • I was diagnosed when I was 16, but I know I've had it forever. In middle school I never ever got a period, I got my first one when I was 16(which I had about 6 on my own) and all my friends at the lunch table would make fun of me...lol...which I shoulda been like "haha you HAVE your period!" ;) To get my period I was put on BC.

Now, I still don't get one. I get put on provera ever month by my Dr. But I've been seeing my new Dr for about 4 months and I love her...she actually specializes in infertility :) So we are on our way and hoping to be pregnant by the time I'm 25 :) (in June I'll turn 25) She just also put me on metformin...so hopefully we see some results!

    Good luck to everyone!!!!

I was 28 when I was diagnosed. I was put on Metformin, and lost around 40 lbs. One year later, at 29, I got pregnant with our daughter. When I was a teenager (18 or 19) my doctor at that time just said I had a hormone imbalance and placed me on birth control when I hadn't had a period in a couple years.

I was diagnosed in eighth grade and don't have kids or plan on having kids for reasons not related to PCOS.

I was diagnosed at 31, after trying to conceive still trying going on a year. Hopefully I can say I conceived at 32. Good luck, and I think it's good to be thinking about this now and figuring out a plan and getting mentally prepaired for it taking some time.

Basically self diagnosed in my early 20s but didn't get the "official" diagnosis until 2007 at the age of 30.

I was diagnosed when I was 25 -- the year after I got married. I had been taking BC pills prior to that point and ran out. I was waiting for me cycle to start again on its own and after several months (and negative pregnancy tests) I went to the Doctor and was confirmed with the PCOS diagnosis.

I went back on BC pills for two years and at 27 stopped taking them all together. I felt like they were triggering my migraine headaches.

By complete surprise I wound up pregnant right before I turned 28. My daughter was 10 months old when I got pregnant with my second child. Right before #2 turned 15 months we began actively trying to conceive a third child and after about 6 months of trying I got pregnant with number 3. Our family was complete.

I am 42 now and while I still have PCOS the gap between periods has gotten shorter the older I get it is still a VERY long cycle. On a positive side I am taking no medication and my migraines have pretty much stopped.

I was 18 when I was diagnosed. The doctor just put me on BC and sent me on my way. Through my own research and finally finding a doctor that had it herself they put me on metformin last July. I am still on both and have fluctuated weight. Last July I lost 20 lbs but when I got married in January and went on my honeymoon I gained most of it back. I am back on the wagon now and am down 5 lbs. We haven't started TTC yet but hope to start somewhere around July or August. I am anxious to get off the BC either way now. I don't feel that it is what my body needs right now.

    I was 18 when I was diagnosed.

I gave birth to my son just after I turned 28 we did get pregnant using Femara for ovulation stimulation.
  • I diagnosed myself around age 27, gave birth to my son at age 18. My second pregnancy was at age 26 which ended in a miscarriage at 16 weeks, the miscarriage led to research which led to my self diagnosis....

I was diagnosed at 14, almost ten years ago. The history of my diagnosis is a little weird XD : I went to the dermatologist because I had a terrible rash on one arm and she noticed that I had a lot of facial hair (hirsutism) so she ordered a lot of exams and one of them showed really high insulin levels, went to the endocrinologist and he diagnosed me with PCOS after another couple of exams and put me on medications immediately.

I was not officially diagnosed until April of 1999. I was 21 turning 22. I had had problems sincei I was 12 though and just didn't have the official diagnosis even though I was on Provera all through high school just to have a cycle.

I got pregnant in February of 2000 on my own. Found out 1 week after my husband left on a 6 month deployment. Fun.

Baby #2 was conceived in 2002 after missing bc pills. Totally unexpected.

Baby #3 was planned. I was taking fertility shots for 30 days straight before I conceived. I tried the clomid and it did absolutely nothing.

After having 3 girls we decided not to try for #4/boy.

I was 23 when I was diagnosed but no babies for us. I had a terrible doctor that kept thinking I had every fat condition possible and was disappointed when my stats would say otherwise. When I was gaining rapidly with no changes to diet and exercise, a doctor who never met me suggested I get my ovaries checked. Who knows how long I've had it but I praise the random doctor for his ability to think.
