An Introduction of Sorts

I had been unwell for quite some time and approximately 2 years ago started to gain substantial amount of weight (approx 30kg) without there being any real change in diet or exercise. Then finally last year in October 20112 all was relieved. I was diagnosed with a "double :noway: whammy" - Hashimoto Disease (which results in hyperthyroidism) and Type 2 Diabetes.:sad:

I have since learned that when you combine hypothyroidism, diabetes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease it WILL affect your weight, and achieving a healthy weight with these conditions IS challenging. Weight loss has a positive effect on these diseases and can reduce your risk of other health complications. If you have any of these conditions, talk with your doctor about effective ways of losing weight, diet suggestions and whether it is safe for you to start an exercise routine.

    Hi everyone, My name is Sarah, I am 29 years old. I was diagnosed with hypo around 2008. I have been heavy since puberty hit at age 12. When I found out about my thyroid It was the first time I;ve had blood work done in YEARS!! I am sure I have had an issue since very young though. after finding out and being on meds I felt better and my hair stopped falling out. Until I was unable to get my medication anymore. In August 2012 I started College at the University of Texas at Arlington. The health care services are free to students with small fees for blood work if you do not buy the student health insurance. I knew I needed to take advantage of this and get back on my meds, by this time my hair (thank God I have had thick hair my whole life) was coming out in hand-fulls in the shower. I have this odd place of dry skin on my right hand that has been there since about 2005 and it started to get dryer and dryer and I was SOOO TIRED all the time! So I went to see the College Doctor, I told her my history, they took blood and the blood work showed my thyroid was out of whack (DUH!) She put me on .75mg of synthyroid. Today I went back for more blood work as my med refills were up and she wants to see where I am. (Get those results tomorrow).

    2 weeks and 3 days ago is when I started MyFitnessPal to keep track of what I'm eating. I have cut out soda completely, I drink water or green tea (the tea bag kind) I have cut my carb intake (I have no idea as to how many I was eating before but lets just say McDonald's and Taco Bell took a lot of my money through out my life!!) I am eating more protein and fruits and veggies. I wasn't sure what I weighted when starting this life change but I assumed about 360 as in Sept I weighted 366. Today when I went for my blood work I weighted 349!! I am excited that I have lost weight, and excited to feel better and to get my thyroid under control. (THIS WAS WRITTEN ON 2/6/13)

    If anyone wants to add me as a friend please do!

    Thanks!
    -Sarah

    Update on my story. I went back to my doctor yesterday. I was down another 4lbs! so I've lost 21lbs since sept. (Only been really trying for a month though).

    Since my blood sugar was still high on my labs the doctor said I had a "little bit" of diabetes (I dunno how I can have a little bit??) LOL So I start on Metformin today to help lower my blood sugar. The doctors office gave me a Blood glucose monitor with 10 strips for free. I took my sugar at 430pm after the dr 6 hours after eating lunch and it was 99. and my resting at the dr the other day was 130. This morning I took it and resting was 105.

    My thyroid looks great she said and my blood pressure is great!

    If anyone wants to add me please do!

    Hi Sarah,

    A good way to see how you are really coping with your diabetes is to check your sugar 4 times a day keep a log on results.
    Best times are;

    * When you first wake up (fasting)
    * 2 hours AFTER Breakfast
    * 2 hours AFTER Lunch
    * 2 hours AFTER Dinner

    Eat regularly and don't skip meals :)
  • This group is pretty quiet. Not much activity here.

    I have Diabetes II and Hypothyroidism. I'm on meds for both, including ones for high blood pressure. So far my meds for my thyroid are working and the blood work is within normal levels.

    I try to eat small meals through out the day. I'm careful not to reduce my calories too much though.
