Pretty much every lift here works your core to some extent with squats and deads being the most beneficial.0

I find that the weigh lifting works my abs, but I also do planks.0

Thankyou :-) I do those a my class so ill give them a go at home too x0 -
Soreness isn't necessarily an indication of work done. Make sure you're engaging your core during your lifts. I heard someone describe it as trying to push out a poop  It also might depend on how heavy your weights are currently, but since the weight always increases you'll get there eventually.0

^this
also if you want visible abs % body fat is a big factor.
also also (hah) i think one of the accessory moves for SL if planks? I don't do those, so I'm not sure, maybe someone can help me out here?
If you really think your core is struggling, planks are a great exercise. Side planks, regular planks, planks with stability ball...Soreness isn't necessarily an indication of work done. @Tree - you just killed my inner therapist! lol! I was just reading research about this and how people have been told engaging your core & kegels are a bearing down like you have to poop, but actually it is more of a lifting up or drawing in feeling if you are doing it correctly! Some very large percent of women do kegels wrong.. Idk what I did the with article...0 -
I do 30lb dumbbell side bends, and some pilates ab moves to work the abs a bit more. I don't want to do tooooo much though before i shred the fat.0

Sorry! I get enough water, fiber, and fat so I'm not too familiar with pushing
For power lifting I think its more pushing "out" like you're bracing for a punch, and not "down." I do try to push out, but if that's wrong let me know so I can fix. I've heard of drawing in while doing other random exercises like crunches. Enlighten us Fishfriend.0 -
I had one pilates teacher that describes it like a zipping up feeling from your lower core (the kegel) up through. It's a pretty stabilizing feeling, but I haven't actually given it a conscious thought during my lifts. Maybe I should!0

@ ho - I REALLY like this analogy!!
@ tree - I'm not a powerlifter obviously, so idk if there would be a reason to do it differently but that feels different to me than what we were taught in school. Maybe you can try the lifting up & in and let us know what you think?0 -
As your weights get heavier you will definitely feel it in your abs. I agree with the planks and also yoga on non-lifting days is great for the core as well as a very nice compliment to lifting.
As for engaging the core during lifts, I agree with the lift up and in thing....I feel like when you squeeze glutes, ham's, and quads that's what naturally happens.0 -

Every single lift in stronglifts engages your core.
No additional corework is needed unless you start to feel its holding you back or its just something you want to do.
Also - forget about soreness. soreness is not a measure of progress or how hard you worked. Most experienced lifters only get sore rarely, even after a max effort set.0 -
I like to do some some bicycles/side plank/other bodyweight thingies on off days, mostly from exercise habits before lifting stuff. Just a nice reminder of 'yes these are your abdominal muscles and you should be squeezing them mightily when picking up heavy things  or else your back will go :noway:  '.0

Iv always suffered a bit with my back ... But gave found I now have to roll out of bed in the morning .!! Once I'm up and about I'm ok but lying in bed is a killer on my back ..!! Maybe I'm not engaging my abs enough then if my back is being affected x0

In 20 or so SL sessions, with no accessory work at all, I went from being unable to Ro a single sit up to doing 7, and I only stopped there because my calves ached from something else.
SL definitely works your core!0 -
Thanks everyone for your replies x
I have found them all very useful :-)0
