eek...the dreaded plateau

I'm doing everything right. Counting calories, working out i do lift weights but i can't seem to get past this number on the scale. There's so much conflicting information on here and the web. Lots of mfp posts day up your calories and changed your workout. Did that, lost 1 pound then stopped. The web days drop your calories and change your workout. Did this and nothing. So to the people that have plateaued, what seriously worked for you?

    /listens intently....

I've been in the same 3-5 lb yo yo plateau since Christmas. If there's any good ideas, I'm all ears. I've tried everything I can think of and some ideas I've seen posted, to no avail this far.

I got stuck for 3-4 weeks, literally didn't even lose 1/4 of a pound. I stopped calorie counting (but still logged everything) and just ate whatever I wanted for 2 weeks and I lost 3 pounds. Genuinely, it worked for me!

Honestly, you just have to keep at it. One of my longest plateau's was probably like 6-8 weeks or more. I just kept bouncing between the same 3-5lbs. I finally upped my calories, and it worked. I didn't really change my exercise, I never really have, lol. I used this calculator, http://scoobysworkshop.com/accurate-calorie-calculator/#results
Also sometimes taking a break from exercise, or the calorie restriction can break it. Sometimes the body just needs a rest.

From what I have experienced, I try to recalculate my calories about every 5 pounds I lose. Just to make sure that what I am taking in, is a correct amount for where I am at. I too use the calculator that Klem4 mentioned, and it seems to work well for me.

Everyone is different though, try some things out, but give your body time to adjust to what you are changing.

I have finally broken mine and I think the problem was I was being too consistent, eating the same foods every day, same calories and carbs everyday. I switched to a program where every day I had to eat something different for lunch different for breakfast. A different fruit and vegetable than yesterday. If you we're like me caught in the chicken breast/spinach/ raspberries/ broccoli merry go round, you may be "too perfect". Worth a try? Worked for me I lost 2 lbs last week. Oh yeah and I upped my cals to 1400-1700 range, cycling through the week.
  • I've done a ton of research on this and here's what I have learned.

Make sure you know your accurate BMI and TDEE
Do NOT eat below your BMI (even if MFP tells you 1200 is okay) and do NOT eat above your TDEE
Make sure you are meeting your macros - just because you are meeting your calories doesn't mean you are feeding your body
Eat a wide variety of foods - not just the same thing all the time.
Not eating enough is just as bad as eating too much.

Get your heart rate up there for 30 minutes minimum at least 3x/week
Do strength training/resistance exercises at least 2x/week
And change things up - confuse your body by having it do an exercise it's not used to.

I assume you meant not to eat below your *BMR* not your BMI... Body Mass Index isn't going to help with your calorie counting.

My scale finally moved as well. I started running and speed up my strength training and finally saw some results.

Same here. I was doing so well. I have 15.3 to go in 3 weeks. I wasn't able to exercise and I started losing only ounces. My son is going to help me to get through these last pounds. He promise me he will stand by while I walk on treadmill.(I fall sometimes so I need someone near) I am going to try to(again) to increase my foods. Not eating enough will cause you to slow down. I will try to eat at the same time everyday and see if that help. I will not give up I will get the weight off. By the end of the 3 weeks I will be walking on the treadmill 30 minutes continuous and I know for a fact when I do this for a week I will lose 10 lbs.
HANG IN THERE LADIES it will happen. he scale will move.

Also, this sounds stupid, but I used to lay in bed before I went to sleep and mentally tell my body "It's okay to let go of this weight". Sort of meditate on it. Depends on your own personal beliefs and tolerance of stuff like this, but I believe your body and your mind are linked. Worth a try when you are stuck.

P.S. the calorie cycling is still working for me. I use the "week" function on the app to see whether I hit an average calorie goal through the week. Sometimes over, sometimes under. You know.
