Do you guys always warm up before a race? I've a race coming up and would love to hear your pre-race strategies  It usually take 15/20minutes for my muscles to feel ready to go...

    What race?

For short runs (10k or less), you should be warmed up and ready to "sprint".

For the half and full, if you've got the energy reserves, run a few miles to loosen up.

For us folks here in the weeds, jog a little bit and use the first few miles as the warmup. I read somewhere recently (can't cite the source) that every run should be a negative split.

Oh, static stretching is a great way to pull muscles/run slower/ etc., etc. Every thing I've read about studies done on static stretching conclude that it reduces performance when you static stretch before you run. I know - everyone does it and everyone does it because everyone does it. Sure fire ways to tell who's a noobie at a race is to see who's wearing the race day shirt during the race and then see who's doing people static stretches.

For races shorter than a marathon I warmup with an easy mile followed by a few strides to prime the fast twitch muscles. For the marathon I just jog a little until the legs feel loose.

For 5K and 10K, I'll do an easy 3 miles with 4 strides, then change shoes to racing flats and do 2 more strides right before the gun.

10M and HM, I'll do an easy 1 to 2 miles with 4 strides.

Marathon, I'll just do some easy, light jogging. Maybe a half mile at the most. No strides.

I personally don't like to run before I race. I run less than a mile no matter what the distance of the race I'm warming up for, I just feel like it uses up my energy reserves. I do a few strides if it is a 5K or 10K. If it's a half, I just use the first mile as my warmup. I really prefer stretching then running in place and jumping jacks to get my HR up before race time.
