New to Stronglifts

Hi everyone! Just starting out on the program and did session A at the gym last night. All was going well until it was time for barbell rows. I used a 35 lb. barbell because I wasn't sure I was going to be able to lift anything heavier. The plates are small and it felt awkward to me bringing the bar to the ground after every rep. I felt like I was losing my form a bit. I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and also wondering if it's really necessary to bring the bar all the way to ground. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Stack a few plates on each other and bring the barbell up a little. Makes it much easier if you're using the lighter and smaller plates. Personally I don't see the need to do pendlay rows like Mehdi describes (as in touching the ground with every rep). A normal barbell row with good form is sufficient. But that's just my personal preference, experience and see what works best for you.0

Yep, stack up plates to mimick the height of 45 lb plates for Pendlay rows. I work out in my garage so I used recycling crates.
And/or adjust your stance. That works too. As long as your back is parallel to the floor and your lower body is stable so you can "simulate" an "inverted bench press" basically (except you're pulling, not pushing, and the range of motion works your back more so than your chest). With the empty bar, you're probably still going to have to prop it up though.
And not all rows work the same musculature, so classic barbell rows will not necessarily strengthen the same muscles as Pendlays which is going to probably mess with your Pendlay progression. But, just try different rows and see which version "sticks".0 -
Both hit the back the same way I'd say. It's just a different version of a 'bent over barbell row'. Some say there are less lats involved in this particular movement but I don't know.. Depending on ellbow position and other factors.. Stronglifts =/= bodybuilding.0

Thanks ladies! I will try the plates idea as form and not hurting myself are most important. :flowerforyou:0

For awhile I was doing the Pendlay rows using the last notch on my power rack and then I decided to try it from the floor, with plates stacked and honestly I did notice a big difference.....and I also noticed a big difference in pulling each rep from the floor too.
There is a great video on the SL website in the archives of Pendlay giving directions on form for the Pendlay row. Highly recommend.0 -
