Half Marathon Training

This group seems to include a lot of seasoned runners. I would like to run a half marathon, but have not found a good training schedule to follow. I took a week off recently due to knee pain and am now easing back into running. Prior to the knee pain I was averaging 30+ miles per week, 5 days of 5-6 miles and one longer day (for me at least) 7-9 miles. Any training advice for someone that has never competed in a race?

I followed the Hal Higdon Intermediate plan for Half Marathon. I was running about as much as you. I just looked through his plans and found one that fit my schedule and had as much running as I wanted to do. There's a variety so you can pick what suits you. In the months leading up to my half I did 2 5K's, a 10K and a 4 mile race just to get some racing experience. Good luck!0

Another vote for Higdon, I always send people there for their first race.
If possible, try to run a 5K or 10K along the way.0 -
Higdon is the one I used as well. Been training since January on the Novice 1 program and I am running my first half a week from Saturday! I am sure I am ready!!!0

Since you are already putting in a lot of mileage, I would use the Runner's World Smart Coach plan - you customize it to your starting mileage and how hard you want to train. All the other plans start with a lot lower mileage.0

I second this. I used it for my first half marathon and using it for training for my first marathon now. I use the phone app version.0 -
You say you want to "run" a half marathon. Based on LR's of 9 miles I would say you could probably gut out a Half right now if all you wanted to do was finish. If you want to run strong and feel decent the next day I would add my voice to the Hal Higdon chorus.0

I agree that smartcoach is a good option because it is very customizable. For some reason though, I personally never want to do what it tells me to do. So for my current half marathon I'm doing higdon's novice ii. Very manageable for my very limited time.0

I agree. Also agree with Hal higdon's plans.0
