Hi fellow scuba certified (or hope to be) MFP members. My name is Rich. I just recently joined MFP and saw there were quite a few posts about scuba diving. My wife and I are both PADI Scuba Instructors and our two kids are Rescue Certified. We live in Oregon and dive all over the world. I thought it would be cool to have a forum for MFP members who are scuba certified or are interested in being scuba certified to have a place to talk all things scuba.

    Hey Rich.
    Great idea.
I'm a PADI Divemaster and have been diving since late 2005. Did a Discover Scuba in St. Maarten and fell in love! Came back from vacation and got certified. Clicked with my instructor and he has taken me from O/W to DM and we are dicussing the idea of me joining the Instructor ranks. I just haven't decided if I actually want to pursue it.
Love diving and I've seen some awesome stuff in the last 7 years.
Again, great idea on the group..

Wassup. I'm SSI certified AOW, but I've also done DIR-F with GUE (twice; once with Mike Kane and once with Dan Mackay). Dive in the northeast US; mainly the Hudson, coast of Maine, Mass, and NJ, and the St Lawrence and Lake Ontario in Canada.

Hi, everyone! My name is Beth and I'm a marine biologist and scientific diver living in Miami. I've been diving for 18 years now and dive mostly for work, although I love to take dive trips to the Indo-Pacific and other faraway destinations.

Great idea for a group. Just earned my Rescue Diver last month. Part of what motivated me to refocus on losing weight and getting back in shape was getting my "a***" kicked on the open water rescue.
  • I moved away from So Cal years ago and let my NAUI / PADI / OW certifications lapse. Been back in San Diego for a few years now and my youngest son is interested in becoming a diver. Lost 50 pounds using MFP to eat better and getting exercise using an indoor rower.

Anyone dive La Jolla Cove here in So Cal ?

Shark diving is on MY bucket list too!!!!!
  • Hi all!! I have been diving since 2007 and have my PADI open/advance certs! I have made the decision just recently to get my dive master cert and soon will begin that process. I do have to get my Rescue cert first and that will come this summer for sure!

I live in Oklahoma so really I have only dove in lakes and man made scuba parks. The hubs and I are wanting to go down to Cancun and dive down there and spread out our adventures with that starting point. Hopefully within the next year or two we will both have the time to take off for a 2 week vaca down there!! ;)

Hope everyone has a great day! And can't wait to hear about the awesome dive stories to come as the season warms up!!

    Stefanie

Hello! I grew up in Florida and started diving in High School...been almost 15 years now, can't believe it. I live up in Tampa but I travel down to "visit" my parents in Lake Worth frequently to go diving. I love it, I've been all over the world. Its one of the big reasons I stay in shape 8)

Hey everyone! I live in the Florida panhandle and I grew up around diving. My dad and brother got certified when I was about 6 years old (1990ish), I couldn't wait until I was able to dive too...but as I got older I thought there was no hope because I did not think I would ever be able to clear my ears. I thought I would always be confined to snorkeling. Then in 2009 I was on a trip to Bonaire with a local dive shop and dive club. My husband, my mom, and myself were snorkeling as the rest were diving. The amazing instructors in the group insisted we try a discover scuba. I was hesitant to try it since I was worried that my husband and my mom would be able to and I would be stuck back on the dock waiting for them to surface due to ear issues. I gave in, and decided this was my chance. Our wonderful dive friends all sat on the dock and watched us get into the water, cheering us on and offering words of encouragement. My dad (an assistant instructor) stayed on the dock too...though I know he wanted to be in the water with us, but as I am sure you all know, sometimes family can make things a little tense! In no time we were off; each with a different instructor/assistant insrtuctor. The first few mins were difficult with the ear clearing issues, but after that it was smooth sailing, we were getting closer and closer to the reef. After 40 amazing minutes Dawn (my amazing instructor) and I surfaced to applause from our group. My husband and my mom had already surfaced because they ended up being the ones who could not clear their ears! Anyway, needless to say, after that 40 mins I was hooked! I am sure I was grinning like a fool! Less than a month later I was open water certified back home with my same amazing instuctor. After that it was diving pretty much every weekend... to AOW, Rescue, and then in October 2011 I became a Dive Master. Every year since we have made a trip to Bonaire with the dive shop and I revisit and dive my very fist dive site over and over... Buddy's Reef at Buddy Dive Resort. I LOVE that place! So, all in all, I am fairly new to diving, but I love it! I actually haven't been diving in months, my longest dry spell since I got certified. Typing this is making me want to get in the water right now! Maybe a trip to the springs this weekend is in order!

Sorry that was such a long/sappy post, I am usually not the sappy type! Oh, and my mom and my husband are both certified divers now also!

Rich : I love Neutral Buoyancy Turtle!!! I hope you don't mind if I share him with my dad! He would get a kick out of Mr. Turtle!

To those of you with Shark Diving on your bucket list, it is freakin' AWESOME!! I have done some dives on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and have seen plenty of Sand Tigers. In the Gulf and Keys, a few Nurse sharks and an occasional Bull. Then, this past summer I went back to the Bahamas strictly for the Shark Dive with Stuart Cove's. It was unbelievable!! 30-40 Grey Reef Sharks all over the place. I have video on my YouTube page from both my handheld camera and my GoPro I was wearing on my head during the dive. I'm not here to advertise my Youtube page, so if you are interested in seeing the Shark Dive footage, PM me and I'll give you the address.
Next on my list: Great White Cage Diving in either Gadalupe or South Africa. I gotta see a Great White!!

Yeah, South Africa is my goal!!! I have been looking into Apex Expeditions but just need the money to do it. I love great whites but my fav is the Tiger shark  If I can see either one I would be one happy chica

I've seen a million sharks, but I've only seen a tiger once. I was diving in the Gulf of Mexico at the Flower Garden Banks (about 100 miles off the coast of Texas/Louisiana) in the winter. It was beautiful and really skittish. I also saw my only whale shark there (summer). That was absolutely breathtaking!!!

The Flower Gardens are great...a bit of a trip out, but worth the journey.

Apex is who I would go with also. Love watching Chris and Monique's photography and their shows during Shark week.

Stuart Cove's in the Bahamas runs an excurstion to "Tiger Beach" right off Grand bahama island. It's expensive, but you definitely get to see your Tigers. Check out www.stuartcove.com and you can find "Tiger Beach Safaris" at the bottom of the main page.
I was hoping to do it this year, but you have to have 5 people minimum going, so that kinda blew that out for me. (for now)

Shark week is the best week ever!!! My family and friends know where to find me when it's shark week (glued to the TV, lol) Thanks for the website I will definitely check it out

I love for Shark Week every year. I even have my 6 year old daughter excited about Shark Week. :)
I just got an email from Stuart Cove's this week. They have excursions now with Grey Reef Sharks, Tiger Sharks and even Oceanic Whitetips and Lemon Sharks.. The Bahamas are just teaming with all kinds of sharks.

My wife and I just got our FitBit Flex units this last Friday (3/21/14) and I found MFP to be a good match for FitBit. We are both PADI AOW divers and I hope to start rescue diver in the next couple of months.

My job is somewhat sedentary in nature, so I want to ensure I maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Great to find this group! Just got a fitbit through an employer wellness program so I thought I'd incorporate it with this site. I've been diving since 1995. I was certified in a quarry in Indiana and now do most of my diving off the coast of Massachusetts. I've been fortunate to dive some different locations including the Caribbean, Florida, and California. I enjoy taking additional courses, especially outside of dive season to keep diving (at least in some way). During this long winter I added the Ice Diving course--a great experience but I definitely prefer Florida and the Caribbean (summer diving here in New England is usually close enough to ice diving to satisfy that). This summer I get to try out an liveaboard in the Maldives so I'm looking forward to that.
  • Hi guys, I know this group is kinda dead at the moment with the last posts months ago, but I thought I'd post to see if people are still around. My husband and I are PADI AOW with Dry suit speciality. (Much needed here in the UK). We haven't been diving for all that long in the grand scheme of things, it all started with a Try dive in Rhodes in 2010. We have dived in Tenerife, Kefalonia, the Red Sea, and a few places in the UK. Our next dive holiday is hopefully going to be Malta. My favourite dive saw two rays hidden in the sand, as we approached them they swam (flew) off and were so graceful it took my breath away.
Anyway hope to share dive stories with you all.

Thanks for that post IHateThinking, it would be nice to see more activity in this group. Drysuits are definitely standard here in New England, USA, especially after summer!
  • :) Nice to see some activity!

Haven't been in the water diving for what feels like an AGE (was in August lol). Am next doing pool skills (we're playing with SMBs) in a couple of weeks.

Still saving for our next holiday!

Hi everyone! Has anyone figured out a way to connect our dive computers to MFP? I'd love to have the exercise date from my OCI automatically show up in MFP.

    Thoughts?
