Do you also do cardio while doing stronglifts?

I recently started the stronglifts program to change up my workout routine, build strength and loose my last 10 pounds. I really enjoy doing cardio exercises as well and don't want to completely eliminate them from my workout routine. Are there any ladies who have had success in losing their last bit of weight with stronglifts while continuing to do cardio? I don't want to be counterproductive with keeping some cardio in my routine and really do want to focus on building strength because I think this will help me get to my goal weight/body fat %. My workout routine is as follows:

Monday: Kickboxing class
Tuesday: Stronglifts
Wednesday: light cardio or rest (depending on my work schedule)
Thursday: Stronglifts
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Stronglifts
Sunday: Spinning

Is this too much cardio to see significant gains in strength or will it help with losing fat?

A lot of what I've been reading and in talking with some personal trainers, apparently doing cardio intervals in between lifting sets is supposed to be good. Just like interval training of any sort is more effective and efficient than endurance training. So, for example, do a set of presses, then do some jacks, then another set of presses, then jog in place, etc. But I'm trying to figure out how to rest. I guess if its an arms day, do lower body cardio and vice versa.

    Still researching this.

Rather than between sets, you could do somestuff like that after. I wouldnt' do it in between, you'll be too tired to lift.

Nia shanks had a guest post about a post-lifting fat burning thingie.... lets see.....

Very hard to tell honestly, some people do well with this much work adn some people don't. I couldn't sustain it on a deficit - I *could* if I wasn't eating a deficit. But I know other people who'd be just fine.

you're just going to have to try it and see - How committed are you to the spinning and kickboxing? do you do it for hte burn or because you love it? If you love it, keep it. If you just do it for hte burn, I'd substitute some easier lower intensity cardio

I really do love doing the kickboxing and spinning. I think I will keep at this routine until the lifts start getting to be too much and then reduce the cardio. At this point (I'm only on week 2) its still relatively light. Thanks for the help!

i'm able to run 3-4 times a week (hilly 3-4 miles runs) while doing SL 3xs a week and eating at a slight deficit. i will say though that about a month in i had to cut back to running once or twice a week...i was beat. now i'm back to 4 times a week. i'm currently on week 13 of SL. i have listened to my body and adjusted accordingly along the way. :)

I think it also depends what you're used to. If you're used to the cardio and adding in SL, you'll have less trouble than someone who starts SL and that level of cardio from doing nothing.

I am pretty used to workout out a lot with a lot of cardio, so I don't think I will have trouble incorporating stronglifts into my workout, I just dont want to hinder the strength gains if I'm not leaving enough time for recovery.

katemarcus: have you seen significant changes since you added stronglifts and continued running (in terms of body fat % or inches or weight)?

This is the same sort of thing that happened to me. At the beginning I was fine to keep up cardio along with SL then towards the middle of my first 12 week cycle, there was no way I could give 100% to both. Now I'm in my 2nd 12 week cycle and I'm fine to do SL every other day, cardio following lifting and yoga on non-lifting days.

Just listen to your body but prioritize the weight lifting over cardio

absolutely!! i am so much firmer!! body fat % definitely down. weight is the same...i was eating pretty much at maintenance for SL...have started a higher deficit now to hopefully lose a few more pounds before summer. :)
  • Every once in a while I'll attend a spinning class, but that's about it.

I do ZWOWs, which are basically HIIT/circuit workouts. I'm only a few weeks in and I've been doing them about 4/5 times a week, but I'm willing to dial it back if my body feels too tired.
