Sudden knee pain

I have been CFing since July. I grew up playing soccer and have had some mild knee pains in the past but they have not bothered me at all since I started. Now, all of the sudden, they have been really sore for like a week! Previously I could do a full squat and now I struggle with even 1/4 depth.
I'm going to go have them checked out, which will result in PT (been down this road before). I was just curious if this has happened to anyone else. I wish I knew what caused the sudden change!

I have not had this issue, but I would suspect a couple of possible issues. One is always a challenge for the diehard crossfitters and that is recovery time. You might not be getting enough rest, but I do not know how often you go. The next one, I have had experience with, is floating cartilidge. If you have had a miniscus tear in the past, it can leave floating debris in the joint and can work its way between or next to the joint causing irritation. You might just need to get your knee scoped and cleaned out.0

I did cheerleading for 10 years and have always had terrible knees. Sometimes I find they hurt during crossfit when I dont take adequate rest days, and also when I dont squat past parallel. If I squat just above or right at parallel, then it kills my knees. Gotta get low!0

I know that my CF experience is different than most, as I began this journey quite overweight, and I am using it for weight loss. Therefore, I scale a lot right now, AND I am taking things slow in order to avoid injuring myself, especially my knees. I have pain in the right knee sometimes. I am also quickly approaching forty. I have started taking Glucosamine Chondroitin as recommended by a Physical Therapist. It has helped all of my joints, including my knees.0 -
I injured my knee during a big run before I started CF - since then as soon as I run my knee kills me, however I can do sprints, squats, box jumps - it's weird. I am taking Glucosamine Chondroitin and feel it's helping. Just modify what you are doing so your knee rests. Talk to your coach so they can help you.0

I CF 3-4 times a week. The strange part is I had only gone ONCE the week the pain started. I've gone twice since then and just REALLY REALLY scaled an the pain is still there. I couldn't get a PT appointment until next Mon, but I'm still going to go a few times this week. I'm hoping for some power cleans!0

About a month or a month and a half after starting Crossfit, I started to get a little niggle in my right knee. A few days later, the knee swelled quite a bit and was pretty sore. I went to a doctor and was told it was patella-femoral irritation caused by uneven activation/use of VMO and VL muscles in the leg. From what I hear, this is quite common. I took a week off Crossfit and spent it doing VMO strengthening exercises and that seems to have solved my knee pain issues.
But as you've noted, it's probably best to identify exactly where the pain is & what type it is and seek professional advice on how to deal with it.0
