Moving to Tucson!

Hi there,

My name is Lisa, and I'm from Toronto, Canada. My husband and his business partner "invented a business" and have decided that Tucson makes the most sense for their head office (business partner lives there). So, it looks like we are moving there this summer (assuming INS approves his application soon!)!! I'm so excited!!

I know it's going to be super hot there (but hey, it's a dry heat right?) so I'm trying to prep myself for that (sitting in the sauna in the gym lol!).

I have just started being semi active again after a back/ hip/ knee injury (ah the joys of being 40+ and obese) and am looking to join a fitness club (with a pool!) as soon as we arrive. Any suggestions? We've rented a house (yep, even before we get our visas - we are THAT excited) in the "foothills of the foothills" - River and 1st area and hubby's office is right downtown - N. Stone and Pennington. Our daughter will also be attending Pima Comm College downtown. So, anything in that square on the map would be great:)

I love the hiking thread and am hoping to start small, easy, hikes after the summer weather breaks. I think it will be a great activity for the entire family - even the dawg:) Am also hoping that now that I won't have to deal with narrow traffic lanes and aggressive drivers I will find a good bike and start biking around town !

So, that's me! Please feel free to add me up as an MFP friend or offer any tips/advice etc for living in Tucson .

Thanks!
Lisa

Thanks,

Hi! And "pre" welcome to Tucson! I'm way on the east side of town, so I don't know much about your side, but I used Google maps and pulled up Tucson AZ and then gyms. Looks like there's an LA Fitness and Chuze Fitness near your home area. I also think there's a YMCA and Gold's Gym in the downtown area.

I don't know how much help that is. Maybe others from that area can offer more info.

I hope everything works out for you!!!
  • Hi Lisa and all...
If I were to join a gym in Tucson, I would probably either join the racquet club for the variety of pools and classes or the JCC more for the cultural atmosphere. Currently I goto the community recreation centers including the Edith Ball pool which is heated and available for folks who bring in a doctor's note and only 2 bucks a visit I believe.

I've worked at the Tucson Jewish Community Center (JCC) for almost 25 years. We have an awesome Health And Wellness Department. Full gym, racquetball courts, tennis courts, junior-Olympic pool, full weight/fitness room, pilates room, yoga studio, dance studios, aerobic classes, PACE, bodypump classes, etc etc etc. We've got it all. And it isn't far at all from where you'll be living.

Thanks so much for the replies!!

I googled the info as well and am very grateful for the "insider's point of view" offered here :)

The JCC was my first choice however one of the only 2 couples I know in Tucson were members and found it impossible to get any pool time - especially in the summer as it was either private lessons or a free for all. Since we are moving there in July, and have no pool, this is a priority lol!! Naomi your recommendation is pretty high so I will definitely go check it out when we arrive!!

I'll be looking at the other options too - thank you! Seems like Canadians aren't the only "nice people" out there ;)

Yes, in the summer the pool will be very crowded. Camp uses the pool almost all day, especially in the morning. But it is not exclusively for camp or lessons. It is open to any member at any time. You just won't have a completely open space all to yourself. Fridays in the summer should be less crowded though, more camp groups are scheduled in the Splash Park instead of the Pool on Fridays. And afternoons will always be a little less crowded, only the really big kids swim in the afternoon, we (little kids) will be napping.

Let me know if you want more JCC info, I've got the whole scoop!
