What is your heart rate when running?

I have been running for several (7) years. Last summer I started using my garmin's HR monitor. My heart rate was alarmingly high! I would routinely be in the 170s, and if I pushed, I even hit 180.
On a long-ish run, by HR is up in the mid to high 160s. That could be for well over an hour. Is that too high for an extended run? My resting heart rate would get quite low in my heavy running phase towards fall and late summer, but I am concerned about the extended high rate over long runs. The weather is turning, and I am starting to pick up my mileage again, so it's on my mind.
I am 42 years old, male. No health problems. Please don't tell me to ask my doctor, of course I will do that next time I see him. I just want some runners experiences with their HRs.
Thanks for any input!

Depends on your max heart rate. My max, I have been tested several times, is about 194 (I am 55). For me I will hold low to mid 160's for a half marathon pace0

In a pace for a half marathon i run with 160 bpm .. 165 bpm... and for the 5k's race is about 175, and in the final becomes about 185 or more in the last sprint...
Oh and about the training, sometimes i workout based in the HR (long runs) and sometimes in the pace (speed training)0 -

Hi Dave!
I'm going to be 42 in May and I could have written this post myself! I have the exact same thing mid-70-180! and I'm wondering if it's bad for my heart too! I'm anxious to see if you find out anything. Please let me know if you do!!

Thank you guys!
I didn't realize you could have your HR tested to see what the max is. I know that general formula people use, but never have had anything tested.
I sure don't want to drop dead on a trail somewhere in the name of being healthy!
Thanks!0
