Is it bad to be slow?

I went for a run tonight and I'm just starting out. I guess I run so slowly that my app decided that I was "quickly walking" instead of running. Is this a bad thing? I think I'm in this more for the endurance than the speed anyway.

No, your app is wrong. You may have been going slowly but the action of running is different to walking. And don't worry about your speed, as you get fitter, you'll get faster. Keep up the good work!

just keep at it. you will slowly begin to build speed. I too was sad when I got home and realized that my jogging was what was considered a fast walk. However I am doing something, which is always better than nothing, and I am enjoying it so I figure the numbers be damned....I am just gonna keep on going and see what happens!

Going slow, at the start, is actually a great thing. You'll reduce your chance of injury as well as be able to focus on form more easily. As has been said, running/jogging is definitely different from walking. The app probably makes assumptions about what speed is a fast walk, not that everyone is different and will be running while others would be walking (If I walk at a brisk pace, my wife has to jog.).

The speed and endurance will come in time. For endurance, focus on staying in your aerobic zone.

Just read an article this morning about whether you run a 15 minute mile, or a 5 minute mile, the act of running is still running, and even some of the worlds fastest runners think they run slow!

The best thing is to go for lots of different kinds of run, some slow short runs, some slow long runs and some slow runs with speed intervals by which I mean 20 secs of as fast as you can possibly manage....they're quite fun and more importantly they gradually teach your body how to run fast. That way when you are fitter you will get faster.
