SL day 2. at my dad' house (he has weights)
both times my mom has been here. and has to mention how bad squats are .. they are really bad for your knees.... etc...
(She has had both knees replaced- last time my comeback was something about. yes she should be careful with her new knees, and I should be fine with good form)
today when she started in on "Squats are bad!!"
my comeback was
"So, don't do them."
I just hope she doesn't conveniently arrange to be here every workout to harass me about doing squats.

Show her all kinds of articles online about the benefits of squats. They truly are the best exercise out there!!! Maybe you can change her mind.0

That's not happening. she's one of those people. Knows better than everybody, is smarter than everybody. she had bad knees, so every does. I have no desire to change her mind, just shut her up.
My dad got home, she must have sent him down. He starts telling me squats are bad. not just for my knees, but for my spine, etc. how that's why he has arthritis now, all those years squatting 350#.
I told him 30# was not gonna give me arthritis nor be bad for my back. He says
Ya, you're right.
I can tell when my dad has been sent by mom mom to carry her message..LOL.
I'm sure it will get better. She'll give up soon.
I am just extra annoyed today.0 -
squats are bad. Mmkay.
But seriously, there have only been one or two times when I've had pain in my knees. I pretty much never have this problem, but it does seem to be very common. One thing that can cause this is walking with your feet externally rotated. Walking with your feet pointing forward can prevent issues with knees.0 -
my left knee creaks when I climb stairs or do squats. but creaked a lot less today. I have been taking that Gloucosamine stuff (spelling is way off)
I'm not concerned about squats damaging me knees.0 -
As someone who has had very whimpy knees since childhood, I was hesitant about the squats, but I have to tell you, I have never had my knees perform so well as they have since I started Strong Lifts.
Even when I first started doing the C25K in January I had to wrap my knees, as they would hurt so badly after running/jogging. Started SL in February, and don't have ANY problems with my knees, ever, anymore. They didn't give me any issues after the 5K earlier this month, either, so I can really only attribute their good behavior to squatting. I squats!0 -
Just picture the little old man that has no butt, walks with a shuffle, pelvis forward. That's what no squats will do for you. Strengthen that backside so you will be strong in your golden years!0

ooh Julie you give me hope to run again, I stopped last year (having only started a few months prior!) as my knee was so bad, the Physio said it wasn't the knee but my backside and hip which weren't supporting it, so hopefully I'm fixing that now!!0

YES!!!! Squats are the miracle compound that I love to love! I missed doing them SOOOO much. They are so good for your core, too...and they are helping me grow a butt from a mere crack in my back...and they have strengthened my knees AND improved my balance.0

My mom is out of town, so I get a week with no snide remarks concerning squats!
Seriously, I am in my 40s and don't need my mom telling me how to be in shape or do anything. (My mom is very very overweight, fitness advice just doesn't sound right coming from her... And now that I think about it, she had that pelvis forward flat butt walk....)
I think my plan is to workout at the base gym in a couple of weeks, but then I will take the boys to my parents house for SL. I might see if I can a weight place set up in my garage, borrowing my dad's weights. We have bench, but lost our weight bar when we moved.0 -
Yeah, sometimes we just need to ignore our parents.
My husband is 43 and his mother thinks he doesn't need to exercise. That's for "city people." Just the other day she told him he's "too busy" to exercise. And to my amusement, he didn't even remember her saying that - he's gotten so used to tuning out those kinds of comments.0
