You know, that just made me think...trying to make money in Mario's world would be difficult. Every time you collect 100 coins, all of your money disappears and you are given another life.

So that is cool...I mean, I'd trade $100 to be able to come back to life after I die. But collecting money would be so hard. You'd have to, like, get 99 coins and then put them in a bank or something, and make sure that they don't come in contact with another coin lest they all disappear.

Imagine Scrooge McDuck in the Mushroom Kingdom? He'd put all his money into his money pool room thing, and then it would all disappear. And he'd fall and break his neck, but then he would come back to life. And he could probably do so several thousand times with all the money he has. But he'd be so depressed because he can't be rich like he wants so he'd be living all these thousands of lives hollow, empty and sad.

....aaaaaaaand this is why I should have taken a nap today.

No, I meant what I typed. That's totally what they called it in the production notes...

In the mushroom kingdom they don't use the coins as a fiat currency like the rupees Zelda. In fact they don't really seem to have much in the way of an economy as there aren't any stores anywhere within the kingdom. From level 1-1 to the final fight with Bowser, Mario goes about at a full sprint without ever stopping to buy anything including food. I suppose it could be claimed he is eating the mushrooms and the flowers.

He does swim in several levels so it could be that it is fresh water so he can drink the water he swims but that is all a bit of a stretch. Not once does he ever stop for a burger or a plate of spaghetti or some eggs. He just goes about at a full sprint doing very large jumps and kills anything in his path with star power, flower power or he crushes his enemies with the sheer weight of his body. That is brutal.
