My zombies are former Olympians.

Seriously... I have the hardest time evading these mo-fos!
Checking my logs, I'm speeding up to a 7 minute mile pace after I get the zombie warning message, and I still drop an item. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to whether or not I outrun them.

I think it's relative to your non-attack running speed. If I go at a steady pace for the rest of the mission, I can accelerate enough to keep all my gear. But if I'm already covering ground quite quickly, there's sports bras and water bottles everywhere!0
-
They also hide behind shrubbery and mailboxes at the bottom of hills and come at me when I'm on an incline. *kitten*.0

What is your base speed, on average?
I usually walk, or do my shamble jog, but sprint when I get the warning. When I walk-then-sprint, I can usually keep them above 100 meters away. But if I shamble jog-then-sprint, they have gotten as close as 70 meters before they were evaded.
I'm almost positive it's based on your average base speed. You have to stay at a certain percentage above that base during a chase in order to evade.
ETA: Somebody beat meLOL @ those sneaky hide-and-seek *kitten*!

My average for the entire mission today was about 5.5 mph, which included walking about a quarter of a mile at the beginning and end, and some walk intervals here and there. My running pace is usually about 6.5 - 7.5 mph. On my logs, I spikes of 9 to almost 11mph when the zoms approached. Not saying that's entirely accurate, although I ran runkeeper simultaneously and it's the same thing, but I know I had major bursts of speed here and there.0
-
to evade the zoms you need to run for 1 minute at an increased speed of 20% ...I usually slow way down..to a slow walk..and dont run until i get the 2nd warning that they are 15 meters behind me0
-
Yep... the times I was caught, my pace had only increased 18-19%. SOOO CLOSE! :sad:0

sneaky!!
altho IRL, id soooo never wait till they were 15 meter behind me to run O.o0 -
Maybe I'll save the zombie chases for times I'm more walking and hiking, then run when I get a warning. I did that today, and my pace increased about 65% during each run. :laugh:0

That and the fact that my mobs don't seem to want to work, but that's something else entirely (/sob)0 -
No, seriously... WTF do I have to do to evade these suckers?
My average pace for the whole mission was just under 6mph, with bursts of speed up to 12mph! And they still sometimes caught me.0 -
Don't stop for traffic!
(No please do, I've nearly been run over escaping the undead :blushing: )0 -
I've taken detours to avoid crossing the road at crucial zombie moments. "Screw it... I'm not waiting for a clearing... I'll go around the block!"0

LOL - this was me the other day. Twice I had to drop an item too.0 -

I started to sprint in the park when the zoms started chasing me and some dogs started to run after me thinking I was playing. I had to stop so their owner could get them back on leashes. I got dead.0 -
There's no real rhyme or reason - I know this because I grabbed my husbands BIKE just as they started to chase and was doing 19mph and they still chased for ages.
But earlier on my run they started chasing and I sped up (on foot) and they were gone fast. (only chased for mere seconds)
I was also caught once during this same run - and I was SPRINTING to get away. Ugh, ANNOYING.0 -
I stick to the exact same speed for my whole run.... then zombies come... I bolt for it for the entire time.... and STILL get friggen caught? I'm dying by the time I get to 9km in my run.... 100 mtrs of sprinting is enough to kill me by then... but I do it... and get caught?
All this time I'm running on thick grass cause it's hurting me less but working me more.... and I still get caught0 -
It seems to help a tiny bit when I start the app before I warm up, so my first half mile is just walking. It keeps my average pace for the entire mission a little lower, so I don't have to sprint QUITE as fast to evade them. But still, they seem to catch me when I know I'm hauling *kitten*.
(I start runkeeper when I start actually running, because I'm anal about tracking my pace.)0 -
Not sure if anyone's posted this yet...
But - I've found that evasion is easy for me when I am not holding my phone... Yet nearly impossible when my phone is in my hand...
I know the iPhone has the antena running along its sides - is it possible my hold messes with the GPS?
I know that when one holds the phone, without a case, from the sides - you can drop a call from blocking the antena.
Just me?0 -
I've had that happen to me twice. Most of the time, I get the first warning of 100 meters, the second is anywhere between 90 and 120 meters and the third is usually also around there, maybe down to 70 or so. I typically speed walk, then break into a jog when chased. (I'm not much of a runner)
Anyway, the other day I had one where the second warning was 15 meters!!! O_O And it was a little hard to hear, so I wasn't sure if it was 15 or 50, so I literally started yelling "15 or 50? 15 or 50?!?" and I broke into a full out sprint. Even sprinting as fast as possible, I evaded them at 12 meters. This morning, I had one where the second warning was 23 meters, then I had to drop something to distract them. It was the first time I had to do that since the first mission, when I hadn't really figured out how it worked.
Someone (in the app) did say once that the newly animated were the fastest, so I figured that sometimes I come across them.0 -

I think next time I'll start the app during my warm up walk (and like you, I don't start my Nike+ or Runkeeper app until I'm actually running!).
Great group - glad to find all this good info here!0 -
It's based on the speed you've been doing. Don't sprint until you get the zombies 100m warning. Ignore the story telling you to run.
The previous runner 5 caught me at 20mph, on snow. I googled the method after that happened.0 -
My zombies wait till I'm at the bottom of a steep hill to start after me. I should stick to parks and paths I know. >.>0

I re-ran the first mission today, starting the app with my warmup walk so I'd get through all the helicopter stuff before I started running. Sadly, the first mob caught me again anyway! LOL But I did do better this time, avoided them twice and caught twice.
This sure does add a level of fun and excitement to running intervals! I like it! And I didn't beat my record, but ran a faster 5k time that I've had in awhile!0
