my coeliac boyfriend is skinny. he was only just diagnosed about a month ago.
i've been gluten free for 4 years now and have put on weight - i feel so terrible that i'm not skinny even though i'm gluten free. shouldnt gluten free people be skinny? coeliacs are thin by definition in my head.
am i just over thinking this?

Just going GF didn't work as far as weight loss goes in my case. What works for me is to make sure that on top of that, I keep my carbs very low. I'm loosely following the Paleo lifestyle, and it is really doing wonders for me! Hope that helps!0

I'm not a skinny celiac. I've always been a bit overweight.
With the malabsorption/malnutrition issues that go along with uncontrolled celiacs your body is essentailly in starvation mode. When you go GF and your body starts the healing process it begins to absorb again. It's natural for your body to want to rebuild and store and it's very common for people to gain a bit after they go GF. This is GREAT for those celiac sufferers who are super thin, but for those of us who have some to lose it's frustrating. In this instance going GF alone isn't enough and calories and/or carbs should be monitored.0 -

This exactly. The really skinny celiacs are usually the sickiest celiacs, i doesn't have as much to do with the fact that they are gluten free as it does with the fact that between the mal-absorbtion of nutrients and the chronic diarrhea that lots of celiacs patients get, weight loss happens. It can take years for damage to heal.0 -
After I was diagnosed I gained about 60#, I think my body was FINALLY able to absorb actual nutrients and decided it should store EVERYTHING, It's now 10 years later, and I have about 20# more to go. I was an absolute train-wreck when I was finally diagnosed.
And... I have done a good bit of reading on the topic, and it's a fallacy that all Celiacs are skinny. Don't beat yourself up.0 -

Apparently a lot of ppl. that are gluten free tend to buy a lot of the pre-package products containg rice flour, potato starch or corn which may be causing the problem of weight stall or gains.0

I have been overweight the last twenty years. I have celiac and suspect I have had it since I was a child since the symptoms have ALWAYS been part of my life ("IBS" due to stress even as a kid, migraines). I suspect part of my weight gain was hunger for nutrients I wasn't absorbing, although a large part of it was due to depression/ stress issues. I found I feel SO much better gluten free, but I do have long term consequences that I suspect are malnutrition related (disabling arthritis at 50, hernia, muscle sprains- all collagen related). For me, it was really easy going gluten free since I felt so terrible before. I have only inadvertently glutened myself once- a prepared broccoli and raisin salad! Was sick for two days! I am very careful though.0

^^ This for sure. That was the mistake I made in the beginning. Gluten free noodles, cookies, brownies, whatever I saw GF I bought. Those products are all very high in carbs and sugars. Now, I make my own stuff. I use flax meal and coconut flour to make buns and tortillas. It's not as easy as just going to Meijer to grab what I want, but it's definitely worth it because I know exactly what is in everything I make. However, I do like to use corn noodles for the occasional pasta craving.0 -
I came here when I was super sick and this site actually helped me figure out what foods were making me sick and those that didn't. I had suspected I was gluten intolerant and that is exactly what it was. It's been a long road to lose while my body has been healing so I've really, REALLY had to be careful with what I eat so I don't gain since I have read so much about it. Luckily I have slowly but steadily lost pounds.
The only traditional foods I replaced with GF versions are penne pasta and GF Cheetos. That's it. Other than that I'm eating whole foods. I don't eat cereal for breakfast anymore, don't make sandwiches - I don't even crave bread anymore! I make my own salad dressings every four days and beyond that I simply watch calories.....0 -
All the GF foods are more than regular foods when it comes to carbs. Being GF is not a weight loss system unless you eat no carbs, but then you would be more paleo. It kills me when I have carbs because they are SO yummy but when you know you are eating more calories than the 'normal' non-GF person, it's frustrating. I'm sure your BF will gain weight, or he might be one of those people all of us don't like that never gain weight...grrr. Either way, it's more about how you feel. I'm sure you feel good and your BF will as well...just limit the carbs.0

If you can tolerate corn, tostadas are generally gluten free and run about 90-100 calories each - a little more than a slice of wheat bread, but doable as the base for an open face sandwich. It helps to smear the tostada with hummus or mashed beans to give the toppings a little something to stick to.0

Actually, A lot of celiacs are over weight before their diagnoses. And celiacs are only skinny, because there body is being starved! When they eat gluten, there body can become malnourished, and a lot also have very bad D... So their skinny because of that... Usually those skinny celiacs gain weight after going GF, because their bodies can absorb the nutrients again... If you've been gluten free for 4 years, you should not be "celiac skinny".0

A lot of ice creams are gluten free, tragically for my waistline. Celiac doesn't equal skinny for me.0

I was an overweight, undiagnosed coeliac too - I had no obvious symptoms so still ate everything. And when I first went GF I was still overweight as I found all the GF "bad" food and was an overater.
Only now that I'm tracking and getting healthy has the benefits of my GF diet (mainly unprocessed, whole foods) really come to fruition - although I've still found plenty of GF treats, just in moderation these days!0 -
I was am an over weight celiac and have struggled with my weight all my life. I went gluten free and gained 35 lbs.. what the heck. IF you are a fatty it is not suppose to work that way- you are suppose to lose when you go gluten free right .. yeah not so much.. I did nto begin to loose until gave up all grains and dairy. but anyway there are a bunch of us that are not super skinny- like some one said, those really skinny celiacs are the sickest ones..0
