Combining SL and Body Pump?

Good morning! I already go to Body Pump 2-3x/week and do decent weights (e.g., 40-50 lbs. for 80-100 reps for squats; 35 lbs. for chest press and back tracks of 80-100 reps each) but I'm thinking of replacing one Pump class with a heavy lifting session. (I want to keep going to Pump regularly and not give it up completely since I get great results and really enjoy the music and instructors, and love the group dynamic.) If I add SL once a week, would I just add 5 lbs. each workout? Or maybe it would be better to do SL 2x/week (so I get an A and a B workout in each week) and Pump 1x/week? Any thoughts appreciated. :flowerforyou:

That is a tough one....well tougher than the balancing cardio and SL question. Having taken Body Pump, I think it is possible to combine the two, you will just need to really listen to your body when it is tired. SL and Pump are similar movements, but very different conditioning of the targeted muscles. I would consider doing SL 2x/week and then Pump in the middle of those days with at least one rest day on either side of SL and Pump. As long as you temper your expectations as far as progress in SL and the possibility that Pump may feel a little more draining, you should be fine.

I haven't done it but I'd go for 2 sessions of SL a week for now, you can always change it back.

As far as adding 5 every workout ..... should be fine to do that.

Also - keep in mind that the bodypump movements aren't quite the same as what you do for SL, at least as far as I have seen. The squats should be more low-back than high back and its important to get to parallel, etc etc. I'll leave it to you to research and compare, just be aware of those differences.

Do it 2 times a week. In NROLFW, they mention that if you're only going to lift one day a week, it's not worth your time. I would think that would count for SL too.

Thank you! As for form, I already am going to parallel in Pump, so I think I'm set for squats. (I looked at Mehdi's YouTube videos and he was doing the same form taught in our classes for everything but deadlifts, which are bottom-up in SL rather than the other way around in Pump.) I checked out the equipment at the gym today after Pilates and got intimidated ... I know, lame, but ... :embarassed: Tomorrow for sure.

Imo you can mix the 2 but you won't fully benefit from lifting twice a week only while doing muscle endurance training. It will hinder/slow down your progress in the long run.
