New Plan from the doc

Backstory:
PCOS & IR and have been struggling with a recent huge weight gain after being on steroids for a few months post op and have been living on a 1200-1400 calorie a day diet while doing 1-3 hrs of cardio a week plus weights and yoga... and have still been gaining weight!!!

NEW plan:
Doc wants me to start a 600-800 calorie diet for the next 3 months to try to bring down my weight so my metformin will start to take effect again. I guess that my body compensated while being on the 1200-1400 cal/day diet so that my cortisol and IR has become so severe that I need to do this...

Has anyone else had this order?
If so how'd it go/what did you eat?!?!

I've been told to just eat lots and lots of veggies, little bit of meat and maybe one fruit a day. She wants me to get a drastic weight loss to get things kick started.

I feel like I'll be back to doing what I was doing before I was diagnosed to maintain weight and I'm not too happy about that but at this point I'll seriously do anything that helps!

I may be the wrong person for this but are you eating enough. I don't know how tall you are but 1200-1400 calories could be low if you are tall. I am 6 feet and stated off at about 295. My doc put me on 1976 calories each day. But my diet was lower carbs. I am not supposed to have more than 80-100 grams of carbs each day. Right now I am trending 100-150 each day.

I agree with the above. I eat any where from 1400-2000 calories but eat low carb around 90-150 grams each day. I've also cut out gluten and I have been loosing at a nice and steady rate. I would actually suggest getting a second medical opinion because going as low as the DR wants you to go could cause you to go into starvation mode.

Yeah I'm only 5'5" and for the last few months I'm been eating a dairy free/gluten free dietand 70 carbs or less a day and still losing weight. My doc says my body is out of wack and we need to "shock" it back into shape.
I had to cut out gluten and dairy in the past and lost a lot of weight very easily but then my metformin was doing the job and its not doing it now I guess but because of my tummy being too sensitive I can't up my dose.

Hi! 600-800 is low, but I have been told by my Dr to go lower than 1200 calories, because of how PCOS affects metabolism. Anyway, it sounds like your Dr feels that low calorie would help your health issues. In certain situations, doctors do put people on very low calorie diets because of health problems, and it helps the symptoms that they are having. Assuming that you trust your doctor, they have your entire medical history, and can give you a solid reason for their recommendations; then I would follow their advice.

Low calorie as well as eating small frequent meals seemed to help my IR a lot. The lowest that I have done has been 800 calories. Although, I always do eat back my exercise calories. I didn't go into starvation mode @ 800. I had energy, and was consistently losing weight. I am on 1200 right now and eating back exercise calories. I am not losing on 1200.. .so I may need to lower my calories also.

Anyway, I would agree with eating A LOT of vegetables and other low calorie nutrient rich foods. That will help you get the nutrients and vitamins that you need on such a low calorie diet. I like to make "Hungry Girl" recipes. They are low calorie, easy, and taste good.

I'm sorry. That sounds like terrible advice. I suggest that you try a very low carb, moderate protein, high fat diet. Increase your calories to 1400-1500. Decrease your cardio. Increase weight training. Drop your carb intake down to 10% or less. Try that for 1 month.

A 5 day fat fast might jump start your weight loss as well.

wow, that sounds like a really low calorie intake, it might be worth asking your doc where they got their info from? tell them you want to do a little reading, and maybe find some success stories. I'm not sure where you're from but in the UK we follow evidence based medicine, its gotta be similar in the US, so there should be no harm in asking.

Oh yes I had her pull up where she was getting the information from at the appointment! I wasn't going to do it unless she could show me the evidence for it. Thankfully i'm in nursing school now so its easier for me to stand up to my MD now lol!

So far everything has been going great! The first day was hard and the second was even worse but now its easy! I even took a day for me because that was the only thing that got me through the first two days and all I could think about was how much I'd rather be eating something else that was much healthier!

Here's to hoping that the weight loss continues!!!
