Hi all! I'm new to this so forgive me if my question has already been covered - So Saturday night is fish n chips & family movie night; I usually have a "good" size battered cod & chips, what I'd like to know is am I better to have battered cod (smaller size of course) or two fish cakes (breaded not battered)?
Thanks for your help. Also you are welcome to friend me xx

I googled... dont know how true this is but according to this website - http://www.nutracheck.co.uk/calories/calories_in_takeaways/calories_in_fish_and_chips.html
cod in batter - medium - 444 cal
fishcakes - 1 - 186 cal ... so your talking 372 for 2...
so id say fishcake but I dont know how reliable that site is, not sure you'd get a true estimate from anywhere though so thats probably as good as its going to get

edit - OMG just looked back at that page... Chips - average portion - 951 cal
I am never eating chips again!!!
*faints*
edit no 2 -uh maybe bare that in mind when dishing up your chips tonight... sorry ! It just shocked me I mean I know chips are bad but thats upsetting0 -
Everything in moderation, but I would go for fish in batter, and leave he batter on the side of the plate
reason is less processed & unknown ingredients
In all honesty I would scoff the lot & regret it tomorrow ;-)0 -

if you've been careful all week, why not treat yourself :bigsmile:0 -
If they are both battered, cod has a smaller surface area to volume ratio so you should get less batter and oil.
It's not that bad a choice as its cooked at a high temperature so not much penetrates into the cod itself. I tend to eat all the fish and half or less of the batter (who wants to eat the skin side anyhow?!) and share a single portion of chips. With mushy peas, I estimate that comes in at around 850 calories.0 -
6oz battered cod + 10oz chips = 999 cals

Make your own fishcakes, substitute half the potato with pureed celeriac. Bulk out with shallot, parsley, cornichon, lemon zest, capers.
Pan fry using spray oil until browned on both sides then bake for 10 minutes.
Much more taste, total control, and lower calories.
Ring the changes with different fish, including smoked varieties.

I'd eat the fish but not the batter. I'd cook myself a jacket potato and forget the chips!!
But then I'm not a massive fish n chips fan!!0 -
I always just go for the whole hog - fish and the chips! I love them so much. And the fish I get isn't exactly small either.0

I'm forever disappointed with chip shop chips. I tend to go for a pie and maybe have some veg with it instead.0

I know that fish and chips isn't the best choice in the world, but I only tend to have it if I'm at the coast - 3 or 4 times a year max, when it is a real treat and the calories be blowed!0

I'd just have the chips! But thats no help......
Is there any chance your family would support you and have something healthier? There are lots of recipes out there for "healthy fish and chips" this one is 484cals per serving http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3411/
Or if thats just not an option and its only a once a week treat then perhaps you could double your exercise on the day to give you more cals to use?0 -
I regularly have fish and chips, hasn't done me any harm so far. And on the plus I'm sure the protein content of the piece of fish far outstrips the protein content of fish cakes, so they're that.0
