Crossfit is a dangerous sport. I have seen far too many people get injured doing it to want to get involved with it myself, or encourage others to join. It is over priced, and the workouts are too extreme for most people. It's far better to have a moderate exercise program and not get injured than to exercise at extreme levels, get injured, and have to take weeks off to recover.

Here are a few articles you might want to check out before you decide to continue with that program or recommend it to others:

If the the full-blown Crossfit workouts were not so extreme, and so many Crossfit boxed didn't have a "do it or die trying" mentality, there would be very few complaints about the organization. However, the Crossfit organization is known for being extreme, and it is very irresponsible of them to issue Level 1 Crossfit Certifications to anyone that can hand over $1,000, attend a weekend seminar and answer some multiple choice questions. Real fitness trainers study for years, and there's no way someone with no experience in the field can learn all they need to know to be a quality trainer in just one weekend. If I was a fitness coach, I would not want to tarnish my reputation by coaching at a Crossfit box.

With so many other fitness options around, I would not want to pay to participate in ANY Crossfit box, even a more reasonable and well run one.

    THIS WAS MY RESPONSE:

When done correctly, CrossFit is not inherently bad or ineffective. I played sports all my life and power lifted for 15 years. No this does make me an authority on anything. I wanted something to help me get fit in my old age. I heard about crossfit and went to 8 different places to try them out. More than half didn't care if I got hurt and didn't bother to teach, they just wanted the money.
People who are in the crossfit group on MFP are like me. I don't kill myself doing these workouts, I do the correct form. The place I go to is a where of my joint problems and my age and listen if I say I can't and modify the workout for me or make me another workout to do on my own.

I do not promote but if someone ask what I do I tell them. Its not for everybody but everybody could do it in a modified version. I read the articles and one thing is common on both. Either they were not knowledgeable enough or their instructors weren't.
No way I could do the first workout with the class for the first time. I started with no weight to get the form and he would stop me even while being timed to instruct. It wasn't a matter that I did as many reps or in the quickest time. It was about me doing it right.

As for it being over priced I agree but the classes are small and over head is high. The full blown workouts are extreme but they don't force you to do more than you can do. Most people hear the bad side of crossfit but don't investigate themselves. Its through the internet or word of mouth that it sounds too dangerous. I had to see for myself. I haven't gotten hurt, haven't puked. Actually I am more flexible now. I spend at least 20 minutes stretching and then I warm up. I do not want to compete. There are movements I can't do and things I won't do. As for the exertion, its like P90X or Insanity with weights.

So how do I know you? Did I promote to one of your friends on here? As far as I know I only told one person to try it and see if they liked. I did say you have to find the right instructors and facility. Most important is the instructors and do they really care enough.

I do power lifting 2-3 times a week and crossfit 2-3 times a week. I do drink a lot of water and try to eat in preparation for the workout and afterwards.

If I have offended someone or gotten someone hurt please let me know. I can't run a lot(knees) and this is just my cardio workout.

Thanks for your info, its always welcome. I do want to learn whats best for me. The more knowledge the better.

Oh my god ! I let my son do this, and I have tried it too, a couple of times.
I thought it was fun. Boy, am I stupid or what?
I am going to suggest he get a Jillian Michaels "Power Yoga: Abs and Butts (those mirror muscles)" DVD instead.

Sounds like Health_gal to me. I think she should be reported as she is spamming anyone who likes talking crossfit!

She has a variety of tactics. Mine was something along the lines of telling me she's sorry to hear I'm addicted to CrossFit, and here's some links that may help me deal with my addiction.

    Very well-worded reply, btw.

It was Health_gal. I wonder why she is attacking crossfit. I wonder has she actually gone to see for herself.

Please be sure to report her. I copied her PM into a message I sent to Olivia (community manager or some other title like that...) and she responded very quickly. The mods/admins are aware of her behavior, but are kinda relying on the community to tell them how bad it is so they can take appropriate actions.
