June "Just Ride" Challenge - Discussion

Okay, I told Snow/Kansas/Jules I'd give this a go. I've not lead a challenge. I haven't been paying attention to how thing were done in the past, so it'll be different and that's okay. :flowerforyou:

1) Have people sign up with a mileage (indoor/outdoor) goal for the month. Goals should be things you hope to achieve, not something you do every month, or there is no challenge.

a. Outdoor miles, please use Strava if you wish to be included in the bonus /challenges.

b. We can count indoor miles toward totals, but not for challenges.
Classes: Keep it consistant, most average ~15mph = 11.5 miles/45minute class.

Trainer: If you are logging trainer miles, you have equipment just report what you do. If these seem suspect or I'll call you on it. Weather is nice nobody is spending hours a week on the trainer these days unless the weather is snarky or they workout when its dark.

2) Form some teams 2-3 depending on interest.

3) Give team points based on percentage of goal accomplished.

a. At the end of the week if an individual hits 10% team gets 10 pt, 25% = 25 pts....125% =125pts. Points go up as you get closer to/ surpass your goal. Makes it a more level playing field for the newcomers and the experienced riders. No sandbagging, please.

b. Bonus points for cross-training, Lifting, running, yoga, etc. (not casual exercise such as cleaning, shopping, etc.). One hour = 1pt

c. Bonus points for weekly challenges (must be outdoor & verifiable on Strava). Such as ride with >1000ft climb, or improved average speed by >0.2mph on a >1hr ride

d. Bonus for longest ride of the week, and overall weekly leader.

4) I'm a chemist and love the metric system, but I'm an American and a tad busy so miles & feet please.

5) I'd like some team captains to follow up and encourage those struggling to meet their goals.

6) Weeks will run Saturday to Friday, all rides fo the week need to be entered by 2:00 pm Monday (should make it so I can get all the info before I go to bed) for Bonus points. Late rides will still count toward totals. Team/Individual stats will go up on Tuesday (hopefully)

7) Once I get folks signed up, I'll create a mileage only thread to make the number crunching easier.

8) Here is the info I'd like

Can it be verified by an another app and not just Strava? I Run a Blackberry and use Endomondo!

Because if so I'm in for June!

Here is a sample of a ride I did on Saturday

Sorry it is in metric at this point but I grew up using the metric system since the time I was 10. I can change the parameters to miles for the course of the challenge.

And if anyone here in this group wants to be friends feel free to add me.

At the current time a friend of mine and I are entertaining the idea of finishing our cross Canada bike trip. We rode Vancover, BC, to Montreal QC back in 1986,and was 59 days total, including off days. If he won't be ready by either late next summer or the spring of 2015, I'm ready to do it solo of find others to join me. We planned that trip for three years, no GPS, nothing but maps. It was a heck of an adventure!

Strava has a free site & ap. It is the one I use and unfortunately I don't have the time to search multiple sites. If you just want in for total mileage, not bonus challenges, etc. you don't need gps verification. for this challenge.

To Vasyl - You can export rides logged on Endomondo into Strava. I converted from Endo half way through January and did about 17 rides en mass. I haven't looked back since converting, the data you get is much richer in Strava.

Mileage: 300 (what is this "indoor" you speak of?) figure it's a conservative goal.

Thanks for wanting to use miles/feet, I'm so used to the feelings of those vs km that logging has been very disconcerting in metric, it just doesn't feel right.

Strava's only has apps for Android and iPhone.. So if I just log on Strava, without the GPS verification that will be OK with you?
I haven't logged in yet, but will do so and check it out a bit more... cutting and pasting data will not be a problem or me, if I have to do so between apps.

I have a Garmin Edge 500 and use Garmin Sync to transfer ride data automatically over to Strava. I don't have Strava on my phone & I don't need to upload data to each respective site. Once I upload my data to Garmin then it automatically updates to Strava.

    Google "Endomondo Strava" to see what suits you;

There is a work around, I believe, for your Endomondo - Strava issue. While viewing your workout on Endomondo just use the "More Options" button just above and to the right of the map of your ride. Use the "export" feature to export the .gpx file to your computer hard drive. (remember the folder you save it to). Then go to Strava and "Upload Activity" and select "from file" then browse to the folder and file you saved. Upload it and viola!

    Good Luck!!

    What are you doing here?

I suppose if I'm not riding outside, I'll try to log in some miles for June in support of n40y. My rides will be inside on the trainer. :\

I'll be conservative and shoot for... 50 miles,

I managed to get registered on Strava, had some problems yesterday. Sent them an e-mail this morning when I encountered the same problem and within an hour I was on. The download from Endomondo was very simple as was the import to Strava... Looks like it will be one more little step, but being a part of something beats the heck out of doing everything solo.

I'm glad you guys pointed me out to Strava, it will help me motivate myself regularly. I have uploaded all my rides I have done in the past two or three weeks now. I can see that there are others who are I would and could have never had even the opportunity of meeting when I was in my peak of cycling fitness nearly 27 years ago... I want to get back to that point, and I believe that this tool will help me because of the segments, leaderboard etc. Really cool site.

Hopefully I can hit the goal as I have been off my game and just can't seem to find the time to get in some bigger rides. I created a strava account for this one-you may have to remind me to use it. I am used to uploading everything to garmin.

Mate, I have been doing that and thanks for the Kudos... I hope the weather holds up tomorrow in the morning. Planning a 50km ride for the morning similar to the one I did last Saturday but with a little twist there is a hill thrown in that is about 1 km long at the end before I take the loop home, that was one of my favorite training rides many years ago. I really do like the richness of the data reported on Strava, eventually, I will probably pay for membership there once I have some cash flow, so much going into business now it is not funny.

Yesterday, I had to Shoe Goo one of my cycling shoes.. did the other one two weeks ago. Same Diadora's that I rode cross country in in 1986, uppers are still good and leather. I am comfortable in them which is a very important factor.

    Cheerz,

And hope to here more form others who are the group on Strava!

I can't make any commitments or goals other than I hope I can get out and ride. Life has taken a different path for me due to my husbands health issues and coming here keeps reminds me to take care of myself too.

Goal: June goal is 200 miles. 150 of that is the MS150 that I hope I can still attend
    I can't commit to be a captain.

    I'm on strava and endomondo.

I just opened up a data thread for activity entries. I will also use this thread to issue challenges and post weekly results. I thought I'd copy the teams over to here for everybody. The teams aren't quite even, 6 vs 7, there is still room for 1 more if you know of somebody. Because points are based primarily on percentage of goal it should be okay. I did split our 2 biggest mileage riders so the bonus points aren't a give me for one team over the other.

Please use the Discussion thread for banter and trash talk.

    Responsibilities of the Team Captains...
    1. Come up with a team name.
    2. Make sure your team data is up to date, points will be issued on the following Monday.
    3. Encourage your team to hit milestones, such as 25% by the end of week 1, and to participate in challenges

    Team 1:

    Captain:
    Christopenes (Chris): 400 miles

    Members:
    Coltsmanforever (Kevin): 500 miles
    kendallsauntie (Jamie): 200 miles
    RoadkingDavid (David): 125 miles
Not40yet (Nikki): 400 miles (what was I thinking)
    narak_lol (Karan): 683 miles

Total Miles: 2308 with 6 riders

    Team 2:

    Captain:
    Katozdad (Carl): 700 miles

    Members:
    Spatialized (Tom): 300 miles
    Mdstamand(Mike): 500
    Travisbikes (Travis): 50
    Vasylp (Bill): 520
    Hawkeyegal (Jenn): 400

    Thanks Nikki,

Planning my 1st 10% ride for this weekend, weather permitting.

Happy to take suggestions for a team name from the Team 2 colleagues. My mind is a blank and things like 'Str-avatars', 'Chain-gang' or 'Dune riders' just don't seem to cut the mustard. If any of you guys are not linked to me on Strava, the QR code I'm using in my profile pics links to my account.

Enjoy the June riding everyone and stay safe out there.

I'm out June 17-21st because I'm the VBS director at church, so no worries there. Besides, you still committed to twice what most of us did. Welcome aboard Team 1. I'm sure Chirstophenes will give it a catchy name soon.
