Hello. My name is Mona. I found this group and I would like to share my experience with you in the hopes that some of you might benefit from it.
I had PCOS from age 13 on. At age 25, I started taking Metformin. I ended up being very allergic to it. It made me so ill that an hour after taking one pill, I was in the hospital.
I did some research and found a drug called SPIRONOLACTIN. I took it for a year and a half and my abdominal scans showed that my cysts had disappeared. I continued taking it for six more months and then quit. I have been off it now for two years and my abdominal scans are still clear.
I can't say I am cured but my cysts are gone and so are all the symptoms of PCOS. I can't say they wont ever come back but for now I am doing great.
If you haven't tried this drug or you are not having any luck with the one you are on, ask your doctor if it might be right for you.
Good luck to everyone!

Thanks! I've heard good things about Spironolactin. In fact, I asked my doctor about it recently, but he said that my skin is improving and I'm losing weight, we should "follow the symptoms" and assume that my hormonal imbalance is improving from diet and exercise. But I'm going to keep an eye on my skin, and if I don't continue to see improvement over time, I'll push a little.
But the drugs do entirely different things: Spironolactin lowers testosterone, while Metformin addresses insulin resistance. Some women with PCOS have on problem and not the other, and some women have both. So it's a good idea to talk with your doctor about what options are best.
Incidentally, I am NOT insulin resistant (thought I definitely have PCOS) but my doctor wants me on Metformin anyway. I've tried it and had terrible problems with it that didn't go away over time. Now I take N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) which is available at some natural food stores. Some women have really good luck with NAC as a good alternative to Metformin.
Anyway, I'm glad you found something that works so well for you!0 -
I have been on Spironolactone for about 5 years, and it works wonders for me. I was actually initially placed on it by a dermatologist for acne, but noticed that it helped with some of my other PCOS symptoms, as well. So, my doctor kept me on it. It really has been helpful for me.0

Good for you it never worked in me and at that I've never had an issue with fertility. This drug is known to cause tumors in babies so both my OB and myself decided there's no way I should take it again. Fine by me0

I have the lovely excess body hair that comes with PCOS so my doctor suggested we try spironolactone. I have never tried it, but she said it is only effective with birth control. Are you on birth control as well?0

That is not true. I was not nor have ever been on birth control.0 -

Possibly just because birth control helps regulate the hormone levels/acne, so that particular doctor uses bc as a first line of defense, then spironlactone.0 -
You don't actually want to get pregnant on Spironolactone. The effect that it has on hormones could harm a baby, especially a boy. So most doctors want you on BC too.0

This is true. You do not want to be having unsafe sex while on this drug. However, that doesn't mean you have to take birth control pills. Condoms have the same effective rating.0
