Hi everyone! My travels are over for now. If you haven't decided on a book yet, how about Deep South by Nevada Barr?

Hope you are having a blast!!

At moment, I am beginning Where Did You Go, Bernadette? And my other book club is reading Two Years Before the Mast. It is a classic month for us.

The Nevada Barr book works for me. Lots of copies at the library.

I love Nevada Barr's stories. I'm drawn into them immediately because she has a gift when describing scenes - it creates an immediate picture in my mind - and I'm hooked on the story. Not to mention that I just made a road trip with a cat, too; and we had a couple of 22 hour drives.

Yes, we passed through Jacksonville on Saturday night - it was one of our 22 hour drives; we drove straight through from Memphis. I'm in Dania Beach right now. It's been raining almost ever since I got here, but we did get a chance to see Disney World on Sunday and it was a nice day. It looks like the weather will clear up next week and I can hardly wait. I'll be you get very different weather up north.

Your trip sounds purr-fect  . Are you going to stay in one place for a bit? I have ordered the Barr book. Are you going to write a book? I hope you are keeping a journal, I am sure you are having some awesome experiences.

I hope you both like the book as much as I do. Yeah, I'm going to visit Florida for awhile, but I will return to California at some point. Since I brought both of my cars here, I guess that means more road trips in the near future! I think I want to stop by the diamond field in Alabama on my next trip. Maybe I can get the trip paid for with a little digging.

And keep us up to date on the carat finds :) We could become the Diamond book club.

I didn't realize this book was going to broach racism. If that offends anyone, we could read something else.

Not as far along as you. But hope to have some reading time this week to catch up. Diamond Clubbers we can start making suggestions for June.

Hi Diamond Gals! I'm still shaking my head about Deputy Thigpen's behavior (in general). However, I've certainly seen that behavior during my years as a biologist/ranger. I've had my male coworkers refuse to assist several times. With her writing, I felt like I could feel the mud squishing between my toes and I was always looking out for water moccasins and cottonmouths. I could really identify with her slip in the muddy ditch (at the beginning of the book) because I've slipped down many creek banks in my work life. I really hope our heroine's life gets a bit less bleak in the future books.

Steppingstone - I'm pretty sure it's your turn to pick a book!

Hey Diamond Club! Hows it going? I too actually feel like I am there with her book. I like it alot because she draws you in so well and glad that she doesnt have such long and convoluted descriptions like the first books we read. Interesting that you have been a ranger.

Hi Diamond Gals Hope you are having a great weekend. Mabug hope your vacation continues to go well.

I have not finished the book but will be done by June 1. So I will add some comments later in the week.. Lots of unusual characters in this one. Unfortunately, I have been sidetracked by a new book called, The Aviator. The luck of the draw when you depend on the Public Library for your reading. Do you believe I am still on a waitlist for .Mr. Penumbra's 24 hour Book Store!?!

Since it seems to be my turn to suggest a June read, I thought I would put some ideas out there.

Since we enjoyed the Nevada Barr's book - maybe we could read another. I am suggesting, The Rope it looks really interesting. I have read 3 of her books now.

My real life book group is reading - Belong to Me by Marisa De los Santos. You could read along with us. I know zero about the book or author. But it might be another wordy one. The kind lenoresaari is not to fond of.

Bought 2 books at the used book store. Had lots of recommendations on them.
The Whistling Season by Ivan Doig and
    Molakai by Alan Brennart.

So think about the 4 suggestions and check them out. We have over a week to choose.

    Have a good week.

All 4 books sound terrific! They all sound intriguing and they all got good reviews on Amazon. I could be happy reading any of them. If I had to prioritize them, I might put Nevada Barr last so we don't get burned out on her style.

I am ok with anything you choose; even convoluted writing styles because it kind of puts me out my comfort zone but I appreciate a new read. If I really cant get through a book I will let you know.

Totally enjoyed Nevada Barrs book! I am done with it and really really really dont like her going into the woods alone.

I don't know how she can go into the woods alone. I sometimes had to work at night surveying for animals and, let me tell you, it's spooky! Not to mention mildly dangerous. We had to deal with copper thieves because part of the property had wind turbines, and we had to deal with pot growers in the woody part of the property. And then there were the mountain lions.... I did work alone a few times and I don't know what I was thinking when I did that. Younger and dumber, I guess.

Finally finished the book. I really did enjoy it but the ending still has me thinking. I thought she was fearless going into the woods solo. But it was scary to read. Her descriptions of the environment took me there. Maybe when I read her other books , I was in a different frame of mind. Now I will read others. May was a good read.

In June I am leaning toward Moloka"i . I guess I would like to be in Hawaii. The topic is kind of grim (my friend's word). Check availability in your neck of the woods. Also let me know if other suggestion are more appealing.

Have a great weekend all. My small grandchildren will be here - so there will be little personal reading.

I'd be happy to read Molokai'i. I would love to be in Hawaii, too. About 2 decades ago, I went there and rode a mule down the Kalaupapa trail, which took about 90 minutes each way. At the bottom of the trail we loaded onto a bus and took a tour of the leper colony. After lunch we eventually made our way back up the mountain again via mule. Navigating down the steep 1,700 foot cliff, with about 2 dozen switchbacks, is the only way to visit the leper colony. I remember there were a couple of bad switchbacks where you are looking almost straight down the cliff and the waves are crashing hundreds of feet below you. Very memorable, but I'm not sure I could do that again without a Depends. At the end, they gave us a shirt that said "I'd rather be riding a mule on Molokai." Very memorable.

Great trip! Been to Maui but never took ferry across. Looks like this book is about that the leper colony. You can give us some first hand incite.

OK I will go check out the book. I have never been to Hawaii but I want to go sometime in the next year. If I can afford it.
Maybe this book will provide motivation to make plans.
