starting at curves...

Hello all,
I am seriously considering joining my local curves. I did my free week trial and besides the overwhelming amount of older woman, I really enjoyed the workout. The problem for.me now is that I am so nervous about committing to a full year. That scares me so much!
The reason in because in the past I have gone to gyms and am really good about it the first few months but then drop out. I think Curves would be good because I have to commit to a year rather than a month at a time.
But, here's my thought. Are there any Curves ladies out there that would want to be my friend who could check up on me to see if I have gone the days I need to. I would love to ask you as well. Maybe we could even exchange phone numbers and shoot eachother texts? I think this would be super helpful to me. Let me know what you think about curves and if you want to be friends and hold each other accountable to work outs!

Will your Curves allow you to do a Month to Month membership or maybe a 3 or 6 month contract? That might be a little less intimidating at first.
I have to admit I am not currently a Curves Member because my Curves closed down in December and there is not another one close to me. I DO go to a Gym (Anytime Fitness) regularly. And I try to stay active on the Curves Team here on MFP.

I went ahead and joined for the year. I got a discount or reimbursement thru my insurance. So, it ends up being reasonable per month. Great job on working out at a new gym after your curves closed! And thanks for helping me make my decision! :)

:drinker: I did the Weight Lifting yesterday except for the High Row Machine. It is on the "Boy's Side" of the Gym and yesterday there were too many Boys playing over there. However this morning I went in to walk on the Treadmill and there were No Boys so I did the High Row after the Treadmill.

I also just started at Curves. I got a 1 month membership at a silent auction and thought I would give it a go. I surprised myself by really enjoying the workout.

I look forward to hearing about other's Curves journey.

I just started Curves Smart yesterday, holy cow!! The first month I worked out I didn't have Smart because it was a membership I bought through Groupon, but now that I am a "official" memeber I get Curves Smart. That little keytag makes a WORLD of difference!! For those members with experience, how do you feel about the accuracy of the calories burned read out? I am curious if it estimates a bit high because it said I burned 420 calories (I mean I did work super hard, I was covered in sweat) and it feels high to me, but that could be because when I input my workout through MFP it says I burned 173 calories. So in your opinion, should I trust Curves Smart or MFP? Thanks!!

I personally always used the CurvesSmart Number for the Calories Burned, but I know that both MFP and CS are Estimates. I think it is more important to just be consistent than to worry about which one is "More Accurate". Just use the one you like, but always use the same one -- In My Opinion.

How is CS an estimate? Its tracking how many reps you are doing, along with your body fat numbers and heart rate 2 times in the 30 minute workout. I thought CS would be much more accurate than MFP. Also I think saying just use the same estimate is not such a great idea..... 173 v. 420 is a big calorie difference.

As I understand it, all Machines are Estimating your Calorie Burn. A Heart Rate Monitor would be closest to a True measurement, I think. But the True Bottom Line is that I just don't really Trust the Numbers on any machine. But that is just Me. I never really based my Calories In on what the Machine or MFP said I burned and I don't make a Point of "Eating Back" my Exercise Calories.
 That really is just My Opinion, and I am not trying to Disrespect anyone else's Opinion or Belief about that Calorie Burns.
  • Joining my local curves was a big time decision for me.
My options were the ymca or curves.
I think curves will keep me more disciplined because of their limited hours.
My curves is open until 7pm Mon-Thursday, until 5pm on Fridays and 9-11:30 on Saturdays.
With me being a teacher and my husband not getting home from work until 5:40/5:50 my only option is to be ready to head out the door as soon as he gets home Mon-Thursday.
I'd love more friends to talk Curves on my friends list here and to help hold me accountable.
My goal is to go Mon-Thurs and every other Saturday (husband works every other Saturday) which is a total of 18 workouts a month.
I am not doing Curves Complete, I do weight watchers/low GI on my own.
I am not doing Curves Smart (yet) frankly because I'm too fat/out of shape for it but I wouldn't mind adding it as a birthday present in about 5-6 months.

I'm glad to find this group on here. :)

:flowerforyou: Welcome to Curves and to the MFP Curves Group! Don't hesitate to try CurvesSmart if you are at all interested in it. I started with it when I First joined Curves -- at Over 300 pounds. It adjusts to Your Fitness and then "Pushes You" to Improve with each Workout.

My first month at Curves I didn't do Curves Smart, but this month I started Curves Smart and it pushes you so hard (in a good way!). I think its great to start out without Smart so you can really learn proper form and start to feel comfortable with the machiens. But once you feel comfortable, don't be afraid to start Curves Smart!! It is SO satisfying to see how many calories you burn at the end of your workout, and what muscles are working and which aren't doing so well. It really keeps you accountable, which in the end helps with results!! Keep up the hard work, it will all pay off!:flowerforyou:

Can somebody explain Curves Smart to me? I'm familiar with Curves Complete but am not doing that becuase I'm working on continuing to follow WW. But I'm not familiar with Smart.

But I will say I am loving my Curves workout. I did an extra two rounds the other day becuase I felt I needed it and even an hour workout wasn't bad at all. I worked hard, but I didn't want to kill anyone which is always a good sign. :)

The Curves Smart is a Computer Program that is available at Some Curves Clubs. You put Your Little Computer Tag in each Machine before you work out and it counts your Repetitions (you finish when it tells you, not when the Recorded Lady says "Change Stations) and as you get Stronger it Increases the Resistance so that you keep working Harder and Harder. At the end of the workout, you get a Readout on the Kiosk that tells you how many Calories you burned (approximately), which machines you Improved on, and which ones you Need To Work on.
Most people Like It A Lot (me included) but the Calories Burned will probably be significantly Different than MFP says,

Curves Smart sounds awesome, but I don't think we have that at our curves. Darn it.

If you have it, there would be a small "attachment" on the top of each machine to put your Tag/Card in. If you don't have it, you might ask the Owner about it. It can be added, and you might have to pay a nominal fee to help off set the cost. My Curves did not charge extra, but I know some do.
