My first century ride.

Although I've been a member of this group since March I've felt a bit of a fraud as I had never actually done a 100 mile day!!
Well now I have. Saturday was the big day for me.

My challenge was to do a 100 miler on my trusty old hybrid - due to neck and upper back issues I can't ride a road bike with drop bars for too long. I've done a few 80 milers on charity rides and a sportive over the years but normally I've run out of training time or enthusiasm to push on to three figures. Really pleased to set a new personal best at my age.

100.5 miles (don't forget the 0.5....) took just under seven hours cycling which I was pretty pleased with (7:20 elapsed time with breaks) .

Well done mate. I've set myself a personal target of completing my 100 mile target this month. That's it I've said it now. It's official.

Go for it - you have nothing to lose (apart from all feeling below the waist....).
    Best of luck.

Congratulations! Quite an accomplishment. I know a lot of people will give you grief about handlebars on road bikes should only be drops. But I have trekking handlebars on my bike. Technically the bike is supposed to be for touring, but the frame is aluminum, I have a road wheel set, and everything else about my bike is road ... except for the front fork (steel) and the handlebars. Go ahead and put a flat bar, with trigger shifters on your road bike, I'm loving my butterfly/trekking handlebars. I have a friend who put cruiser handlebars on her road bike. She has a ruptured disk in her lower back and she can't even do the lean involved with flat bar handlebars. The completely upright position those handlebars give her, makes it possible for her to ride. So, like I said put the flat bar handlebars on your road bike. The lightness you will experience and the comfort you will experience is worth any of the side ways looks the spandex nazi will give you.

I did a sportive and I was surrounded by "racing snakes" in lycra on carbon bikes and mine was the only bike with flat bars (and mirror!). The good natured abuse was almost constant.....

I've been offered a very good carbon bike at a bargain price by a mate who is a serious rider (12hr races etc...) and the thought of converting it to flat bars has crossed my mind.
