Hi Guys
I'v been thinking about joining one of these groups for ages and i mentioned this to my GP when i went about something else and she weighed me and my BMI is over 28 now so she gave me a GP referal which is for 12 weeks free to help me lose the 2-3 stone i put on but i'm not sure which one? I'v never been to any before i'v read the books for SW as my friend lent me them to look through!
whats you opinion on them?
Are the classes really good, helpful, motivational or a bit of a waste?
I'v not really heard much about RC so I have no idea about that one at all!
Any help would be appriciated
Thanks

I'd say Weight Watchers only because my mum and nan are on Weight Watchers. My nan has lost 50+lbs and my mum has lost about 3 stone (she started a couple of months ago!) They aren't depriving themselves but still losing. It's fantastic to see how far they've both come. I think that classes are helpful to begin with being weighed in and having group talks can motivate you more but it's whether you personally find it helpful which you won't know until you try. I tried Weight Watchers before and had good results too but I personally prefer MFP now. Good luck!0

Thank you i think this will be a hard decision lol!

I'd go with Rosemary Conley classes, simply because the classes incorporate exercise and it does teach you to eat healthily without any point counting. Nutrition information is available on the majority of food now, why convert it to points? I have no clue about slimming world.
And if you're here, do you really need to spend ££'s to go to 'diet' classes?0 -
I found slimming world easy enough to follow but largely if you are here you don't need groups or diets, just eat right, exercise, you'll be ok.0

I wouldnt be spending anything as my GP gave me a referal for 12 weeks free at any one of these classes as she thought it might help me! but most people have said either WW or RC! But RC does look the best ith the exercise incorperated!
Thanks for your help everyone0 -

RC for the exercise and you don't need to use special foods either as you are on here too!0

I have tried Weight watchers and slimmer' world, hypnotherapy, pills and potions, spent hundreds of pounds in the process!
The only time I have lost more than a stone, and kept it off for more than a month is on this site.
Whatever you choose, however they tell you to eat, count, move etc it all boils down to your ability to be honest to yourself! Ok weigh in classes do give a public affirmation but you can get the same support from partners, GP surgery, gym, work group etc.
To be totally honest, if you want to do this, stay here, join friends and interest groups, check recipe ideas, read success stories and remember the most fundamental rule.
Calories in greater than calories burned = loss
Calories used greater than calories eaten = gain
It's not a diet it is basic mathematics!
Sorry for essay, just p'd off with how much I spent on stuff that didn't work. X
Deny yourself nothing... But everything counts! No such thing as free food!0 -

I have tried Rosemary Conley, and while I really enjoyed the exercise sessions, I didn't get any motivation at all from the 'talks'. I struggled with the diet and didn't lose much weight. It felt like I was doing the diet from the books with no support and just paying for an exercise class with a weigh in! I could have done that at the local gym.
I now go to Weight Watchers, where we have a fantastic leader who makes the classes interesting and fun. I look forward to going to the classes and am losing weight every week. The Leader is always at the end of an email or text if I need extra support between classes.
if you know anyone locally to you who has tried any of the classes I would ask for their recommendations. Whilst you can probably lose weight with any of these classes finding a good and supportive leader will make all the difference to your progress.
Good luck. I hope you find a suitable class which works for you.0 -
None of them, and I'm disgusted my money is being wasted on these huge businesses that rely on their members relapsing.
I recommend MFP.
I now know my leader was completely unqualified (well I suspected when she recommend white bread instead of wholegrain) and all of the products are a far worse choice than their cheaper counterparts.0 -
I'm another vote for RC. The classes are fun (in my experience) and since you're on here watching your food intake a free exercise class would be a bonus. When I went there was a good cross section of people, from those that were 150lb+ overweight to those, like me, who were fairly fit and just trying to drop baby weight etc.
Whatever you decide being on here is the first and best step as means you've made a decision to make the change for yourself.0 -
I have done both WW and SW and I didnt lose with either of them.
I had a bad experience with the SW class I went to as the group leader (or whatever they're called) was rude to me and told me that I'd never fit in to my wedding dress if I didnt try harder (I was losing 1lb a week) - she was not motivational at all and I made a formal complaint about her which SW never addressed.
I then tried WW online as I had been put off by going to another class and that didn't work for me.
Having said that I do know lots of people that have succeeded on both plans, although I have to say I don't know anyone who has actually kept the weight off for a substantial amount of time.
I know this all sounds very negative but it is my experience of these classes. I do wish you every success in whatever one you choose and I sincerely hope they work for you.0 -
I've done all 3 at some point or other but if you're getting it for free anyway there's nothing to lose by trying is there? (except for the weight! ). So I'd say RC because you get the exercise session as well as the weigh in, you just have to sit through the tedious pep talk.0

Hang about! How much is 12 weeks worth of these classes worth? An the government just gives it to you? No conditions? Please give back the vouchers in protest and use MFP as a responsible monitoring tool. Only you can help you.0

Hang about! How much is 12 weeks worth of these classes worth? << about £100 ($130) i had no idea they were giving out vouchers for free classes! I'd love to go but cant afford it .. and just a bit too un-fat to qualify for the freebies it seems...0

This is not a new scheme I worked for the NHS over 4 years ago and they were referring people then. Usually the criteria to get on this scheme is that you have to have a BMI of over 30, a willingness to change and not been referred to any other specialists in the last 12 months. The cost is about £60 for 12 weeks (not including a joining fee which most WW classes wave now as you can get vouchers in most newspapers to join for free) £60 for 12 weeks if it helps just 1 person lower their BMI permanently then think how much of a saving that is on the NHS not having to pay for treatments such as diabetes, or surgery for heart disease or my biggest bug bear gastric bands.0 -
I would say have a go at Slimming World it helped me lose 13st 10lbs.0

Rosemary Connoly actually does exercise, which is more pro-active. Slimming World and Weight Watchers will try to sell you their products and can be a bit faddy (like SW being obsessed with eating eggs and Muller Light). They also tend to rely on eating "diet" foods, which may not be the healthiest.
See if you can get some local recommendations. Like people have said, it really depends on the person who runs the group. If they are inspiring it can be helpful. If not, it just ends up being a chore and of no real benefit.0 -
MFP all the way, why waste money?0
-
If Rosemary Conley is still preaching low/zero fat, then avoid like the plague.0

I have tried them all! out of the 3 clubs the one I couldnt get on with is Slimming World, Weight Watchers is ok but they do like to plug their products, I like the Rosemary Conley classes for the exercises but didnt like the diet that went with it.
Well this is second time I have registered here on MFP and I need to lose 3 stone by my daughter's wedding in January 2014 so having a go at the 5:2 bikini diet where you restrict your intake to 500 calories for two days a week and eat sensibly for the remainder.
I think you are lucky that your GP offered you free classes for 12 weeks at one of the clubs, dont think mine would and I my BMI is 31.
Good luck with whatever one you choose!0
