The book is broken up in to a large number of journal entries and interviews from various different people that have been exposed to the zombies. Some of the entries were amazing and you would get really involved with it and then it would end and you would be reading the next one and it would not be near as good and you would have to shift gears and dig in to the next story.

I would say that overall the book was ok because the great parts were so good that they elevated the bland parts so that the book ends up reaching an overall average rating.

They could pick a great character from the book and focus the entire movie around their perspective and I think they could make a great film. If they try to include all the characters it would equate to biting off more than they could chew and it will result in a horrible film.

I like Brad Pitt and I think there is at least the potential for this film to work out but I am not sure if I will see it in theaters. I think I will wait till it gets released on DVD.

I loved the book, I think it is unique and well put together. It took me a minute to figure out how it was all happening but overall it's brilliant.

As far as making it into a movie... that'll be difficult to portray it like it was in the book. My hope is that they stick to Gerry but still cover the major incidents that were told in the book. I think those changes are realistic and acceptable. I would be surprised if this doesn't turn into a multiple movie ordeal.

Then again I'm fairly accepting of book/movie differences. So long as the changes are well done I am okay with it.

    I'm keeping an open mind.

I am also accepting of book/movie differences. I actually think it is really unfair of people to judge a movie as being bad simply because it differed from the book it was based on.

The author of the book has the advantage of not having to cram all the stuff that they want to tell the reader in to a 2 hour block of time.

The author of a book has complete and total control over every single aspect of the story and they aren't bound by the laws of practicality that a movie maker is. In a book the author can simply describe a wizard throwing lightning bolts and fire balls. In a movie they have to actually show that happening and all the while they have to get a divers group of actors to portray the vision that was dreamed up by a single mind. We should expect movies to differ from the book at least to some degree.

i loved the book. i loved seeing it from different people's point of view. while some entries were more interesting than others, i really enjoyed the diversity. Im not sure how they'd make that into a movie but it would have been interesting to see them try.

by biggest pet peeve with the movie, is the book is after the outbreak, from patient 0 to the end where kids still cant swim in the water becaue of possible zombies 'alive' down under there. the movie is during the outbreak, where its all of a sudden a huge 'o crap zombies' type of action instead of the slower more intense build up of the book.

but when it comes on redbox, ill watch it, but the previews make me think ill dislike it compared to the book. and brad pitt...really?

Really enjoyed the book as I loved the multiple perspectives but I know there's no way a single movie could manage the scope. If they wanted to truly capture the story, it would have been made as a mini-series (Hello, HBO, are you listening?!), but we're getting a run-of-the-mill modern zombie action flick. Not saying I won't go see it, but it really isn't the same story.

That said, it doesn't look like that bad of a flick - if one suspends belief and rationality which should happen at the movies. It's a big summer poopcorn blockbuster; not a meditation on humanity.

I agree, the movie definitely looks more like the generic zombie movie - which is fun but will lack a lot of the qualities that the book attracted. I think some aspects will still stand out if done right. An HBO mini series would be super awesome 8D

I'll be honest, I'm more looking forward to Elysium.

I wanted to be excited when I saw the trailer, but what is up with this string of fast moving CGI zombies? I didn't like them in I Am Legend, and not really loving it now. I like my zombies to shamble, Dawn of the Dead style. This trailer, all the superfast cartoon zombies running up a pile of themselves, I don't know. It was bizarre. Not a fan.

I prefer it when the zombies run the entire gambit. I think you should have your half body crawlers your shamblers and your runners and even your sprinters. Since a wide variety of people would become infected we would expect a wide variety of speeds. If they are all shamblers then they just aren't scary enough.

I read that the original screenplay that adhered to the book was ditched when the rights were purchased.
I do not have high hopes for this book to movie adaptation, but I hope the movie is good in its own way.

    Film adaptation

Main article: World War Z (film)

In June 2006, the movie rights for World War Z were secured by Paramount Studios for Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B Entertainment to produce.[29] The screenplay was written by J. Michael Straczynski, with Marc Forster directing, and Pitt starring as the main character, UN employee Gerry Lane.[30][31] Despite being the draft that got the film green-lit, Straczynski's script was tossed aside, so that production, which was to begin at the start of 2009, was delayed while the script was completely re-written by Matthew Michael Carnahan to set the movie in the present, leaving behind much of the premise of the book to make it more of an action film. In April 2010, Paramount Studios renewed its option on the movie's rights. Filming finally commenced mid-2011.[30][32] World War Z was initially slated for release by Paramount Pictures on December 21, 2012.[33] In March 2012, the film's release was pushed back to June 21, 2013.[34]

I must admit, I am not that forgiving when it comes to the differences between movies and books. I usually am pretty offended when the butcher the story for the sake of run time. I read WWZ about 4 years ago and NEVER thought it would become a movie. With that being said, as a stand alone movie, it looks AWESOME. I have no desire to reread the book, in hopes that my memory won't ruin it for me. Yonkers and Orange had better be there though, as well as Gen Raj Singh.

Anyone else heard of We're Alive? It's an audiodrama podcast on Itunes. It puts the Walking dead to shame. (blasphemy I know)

From what I've heard so far - don't expect this to be anything like the book. Not at all. Nothing. Not even battle of yonkers.

Pretend like it's it's own neat zombie movie and you'll come out liking it.
