None. I like to be in touch with my body and my surroundings. Music is a distraction.0

Throws my breathing off when i listen to music. I tried once and that was it. One thing that does bother me about a few, not many, but a ew runners...is that they blast their music and are not aware of other people on the trails or paths. So if a bike comes up behind them and they are in the middlle of the path running they cannot hear the biker shout "on your left" they just stay in the middle of the track oblivious. As you can probably tell, this happened to me a few times on my cross training days.0

That is it for me too!0 -
I actually have a really difficult time running if I dont have my music
Not because I need the music to keep me going, but because I have OCD tendencies, and one of them is counting my steps! Imagine running for 2 hours, counting each and every step you take! Music seems to help distract my brain from doing this; otherwise, it really drives me crazy. But I dont listen to my music very loud - I am very cautious of getting run over by a car, bicyclist, another runner, etc

I also need to have music on when I run; I do it safely, but it's got to be there. As for my playlist - I don't choose my music by tempo or anything like that. My ipod is simply filled with songs I love and come from a wide range of genres. I've got everything from Chuck Berry to Macklemore to New Order. If I'm not in the mood for a particular song at that time, I just skip it. Odds are, because my playlist is so varied, that it won't take me long for something to come up that I am in the mood for.0

No music for me. I prefer to listen to my body, my surroundings and let my head be free. There is too much "noise" in the rest of my days, this is my time for clarity.0

All my Ipods broke so I am running old school, without music, again. After a couple of runs you don't really miss it at all.0

If I am going out for an hour and want something to listen to I will go with "The Marathon Show" podcast. If it is going to be longer than that it depends on what I am in the mood for.0

I'm impressed by you guys who can run without music. My headphones quit on mile 4 out of a 6 mile run the other morning and I had to do the last 2 in silence. The sound of my own breathing nearly drove me bananas.0

As long as I'm outside (and not on a Treadmill), I don't need music. I used to always listen to it, simply because I had my iphone with me already, to use MapMyRun. But once I invested in a Garmin Watch, and didn't need the bulky arm band, I stopped bringing it. It's kind of nice to just listen to the surroundings and enjoy running without it, but I do miss it on occasion!
As far as what I used to listen to - it depends on what kind of running I'm doing. If it's a short, fast paced run then I like upbeat music (I guess pop - Katy Perry, Carly Rae J-whatever). But the funny thing is, I don't even like that music normally, haha.
So when I do long runs, which are usually a lot slower paced anyways, I listen to what I like, which is more like the Fray, Mumford and Sons, Adele etc - which is kind of upbeat, but not super upbeat.
EDIT to add - if they came out with low-cost, small wireless ear buds, I would totally start listening again! Haha, that's the other thing - the cord from my headphones drives me NUTS!!0 -
Lots of Mraz! I am moving towards quieter music to focus on my running. Looks like one day no music....0

I listen to rap & hip hop mainly. But I have some Metallica in there too.0

I listen to everything from classical to metal to audio books. I keep it low though so that I can hear what's going on around me (I run pretty early in the morning).
Someone stated that runners at times run in the middle of the trail and are unaware... Those kind of runners are just rude whether they are listening to music or not. Why would you run so that no one can pass you!
In contrast to this, I had a bike pace me on a trail once. This was annoying, so I went over to the grass part of the trail... still pacing me, so I slowed down... still pacing me.. had to literally stop and tell him to pass me. This took place over about 2 miles or so. I hate that!0
