I'm not totally sure if this type of post would be allowed (if not, im sorry. please just delete it) but I need some help. My bf is an avid cyclist and his birthday is coming up. I am trying to put together a giftbasket with all kinds of cycling related items. What are some essential things that you use on a regular basis or think are useful that I can put in there? So far I'm thinking a few innertubes, a cycling cap, maybe a good book about maintenance, a tool kit and possibly a jersey.

It depends on what he has. I mean, every cyclist should have the following:

    Topeak MiniMorph pump http://amzn.com/B000FICCQC
    Park folding hex/torx tol http://amzn.com/B000OZBJD8
    Patch kit and levers http://amzn.com/B0048HG3G6
Basic front and rear blinkies/lights to make you seen at night, silicone preferred for easy swapping between bikes/removal when parked outside http://amzn.com/B006Z7QTKM

    Book: Just Ride
    http://www.amazon.com/Just-Ride-Radically-Practical-Riding/dp/0761155589/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372864411&sr=8-1&keywords=just+ride

Water Bottle (make sure and get one from a bike shop, as he won't want to untwist to open, etc.)
    Gloves, fingerless
Gift card to a bike shop?

Here's a rear bike light that I just got. It's pretty bright for a cheap-o, and it's solar! So, no batteries ever!

Thanks guys. He wants to start taking trips with his cycling friends and I figure this is a good time to make sure he has all of the essentials. So many good ideas and things I haven't thought of. I mean I ride, but not in races and not usually in other states, I definitely want to get him a pump. Thats one thing that totally slipped my mind and the innertubes would be useless without it!

And the tire levers (which come with some patch kits). Definitely only get the Topeak Minimorph or similar. It has a hose nozzle and a little thing you stand on so you can use it like a floor pump. The ones the connect directly on the valve are impossible - no leverage and you end up breaking the valve stem

oh ok cool. I actually bought him some steel tire levers not too long ago because he broke all of his plastic ones trying to change my tire lmao

Am I the only one who uses an old set of desert spoons as tyre levers? I use the base of the handle to lever of the tyre, and the curve of the spoon hooks nicely behind the spokes.

They also come in handy when you want to eat pasta, porridge or anything else you fancy that needs a spoon.

But in answer to your question, one light hearted thing your bf may appreciate is some Chamois Cream.

So far I ordered two jerseys. One Coney Island one and a CBGB one.. Oh and a maintenance book. I figure the other stuff is easier to pick up in store. I ordered the jerseys because he wears XXL and they don't usually have that in store when I've looked.

I was going to get it as a joke and he mentioned it the other day so I'm going to get some.. but I plan on making my own label and calling it something inappropriate.

According to my husband DZ Nutz is the best. But don't buy him the girl version. Or do.

I bought my husband a Road ID bracelet one year for his birthday. He wears it every time he rides.

Oh thats a really good idea! Just in case anything ever happens to him! Especially since he has asthma and allergies. I would have never even thought of that.

I have a topeak roadmorph G pump...it's the only one i have, i bought another mount kit, and just switch it from bike to bike when I ride. Bike shorts are a good gift, mine always stink when I put them on, having clean ones to spare would be a benefit.
