PRAYER: Open my eyes Lord that I may see. Amen

SCRIPTURE:

John 1:29-34
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%201%3A29-34&version=NCV;CEB;NIV

King James Version (KJV)

29 The next day John sees Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.

30 This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizes with the Holy Ghost.

34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

OBSERVE:

Take a moment and write down three observations of the verses. What strikes you? An observation is an observable fact from the Word.

1.

2.

3.

INTERPRETATION:

What do you interpret these verses to mean for you today?

APPLY

Today, I apply _____________________________________________________ because it will _________________________ me.

PRAYER:

Gracious God, You loved us and gave us your son, Jesus. in Jesus' baptism we learn our own duty to be called one of your children. May we live our lives as Jesus did and have your say about us, "This is my beloved child [insert your own name] in whom I am well pleased." We want to please you with our bodies, mind and spirit. Equip us to do so. Amen

    Bible Study
    John 1 : 19 - 34

    04/07/13

    Observations:-

1 My first observation is that John denies being the Messiah. The jewish leaders and priests questioned whether Jonn was the Elijah, or a prophet. John denied this but said that He was making a way for the Lord.

2 Jonn tha Baptist explained to the Pharisees that he baptised people in water, but that God's chosen one who was coming baptised in the Holy Spirit.

3 John saw Jesus coming to him, and knew that He was the Lamb of God. He testified that Jesus was the Son of God.

    Interpretation:-

This passage means to me today that if we have our eyes open, we will see. We will always need to seek Jesus and we know that He is always there. We only need to ask and it will be given.
Baptism in the Holy Spirit means that we get rid of the old and start anew. What an opportunity, who else but God would do that for us. Before my baptism, I had repented, and I had been forgiven, only Christ could make this possible. I went into this having learned how much Jesus had suffered to save us, how He had taken on our sins. How could you not love Jesus?

    Note :-
Sorry but I am not clear what the Apply bit means, please could anyone explain. I am sorry if my over simplification is not what you want, but that is how I was taught. I am sitting here and a song is very much in my mind whist I read this passage

Open the eyes of my heart Lord.
I want to see you, to be high and lifted up

    Amen

    Hi Cynthia,

The difference between interpretation and apply:

Interpretation is the conclusions one draws from putting the observations together and can be general to many.

Application means how one integrates that interpretation into your personal life or daily living. It takes a general thing and makes it specific to one person. You.

e.g. You say you interpret this passage that Jesus took on your sins.

Application for that interpretation can be something like:

Today, I will live as a forgiven person because Jesus took on my sins, instead of me living in guilt and shame, I can live in joy and peace, and share this good news with others.

I hope that helps. Thanks for asking,

I did this twice yesterday. Both times I posted, and then discovered it didn't take. My internet keeps going in and out.

    Go figure.
