Any OTHER foods you avoid?

I was wondering about this.
Cruising around the forums you find all kinds of foods people avoid for various reasons.
For example, there are the primal people who avoid things like legumes, dairy and processed foods.
Then they are those that worry about wheat, soy, white flour, sugar, fruits (also because of sugar), etc.
I think if you took everyone's advice you would starve to death.
Personally, I try to avoid most "white foods", like white flour, white bread, white sugar myself just out of good eating habits.
But the biggest thing I avoid - oil.
When I first went vegan, my skin cleared up from years of acne. I was almost 34 at the time. Then one day, because of having no options at a restaurant, I ate a basket of garlic fries. Within the hour, my face felt gooey and BAM! A pimple. AND I felt like crap. I've since figured out I have to severely limit my fat intake. Oil is almost completely off the table now. I'm sure my previous existence of eating meat contributed heavily to my acne, too.
Also, some oil heavy foods like Tofurkey dogs make me feel like *kitten*.
What about everyone else?

well i wouldn't avoid oil entirely I use now days only extra virgn olive oil (about 1-3 TBsp a day).
well every other day there are some research showing that this or that cause cancer, high blood pressure etc......if we will follow all this research we will end up living in a bubble!
i basically try not to use white flour and soya but i dont stop them completely as said many times before it is all about moderation!
if you will eat once in a while whit flour i'm sure nothing will happend to you just make sure you dont make iot your main meal and try to eat less of it
i try to avoid soya but i make sure that still once in a while i get some of it because even if research show it may harm you it still got some good qualities and in small amount it wont kill you or harm you.0 -
I avoid sodas and carbonated beverages because I have worked at a dentist's office and know that it is absolutely horrific for your mouth, all sugariness aside.
Aside from that, not really. There are foods I eat very sparingly because they are highly processed and not nutritional, but I don't have any hard rules. As far as oil, I simply do not add very much oil at all when cooking (1 tsp is a pretty common addition.) I do eat 1/8-1/4 c nuts every day just because they are yummy and much more nutritious than highly processed oil.0 -
I'm trying to avoid Palm Oil for the orangutans.
I'm also trying to stop having things with aspartame in, but it seems to be in everything.0 -

I follow the basic Whole Foods Plant Based Diet principles:
No animal products, processed foods, oil, white sugar or flour. An keep it low fat.
I'm vegan 100% of the time (to my knowledge) but I do eat the unhealthy vegan foods when there are no other options. It's all about thinking ahead, planning and preparing but sometimes no amount of preparing can stop life getting in the way. There is always something vegan about even if it's dreaded fries from McDonalds... hmmm actually I'd try starving first
Oh and I suffer with acne before and after being vegan. I've done the whole avoid fats thing but didn't work. I just avoid oil as it's empty fat calories with no micronutrients or fibre! There are no free oils in nature!0 -
I keep away from the "white" foods, too. I still use olive oil, though.
angelsandhealth - I must tell you that McDonald's fries are fried in oil that has beef fat in it!0 -

From their website, this is the ingredient list in the fries:
FRENCH FRIES
Allergens: WHEAT AND MILK
Ingredients: Potatoes, Vegetable Oil (Canola Oil, Soybean Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Natural Beef Flavor [Wheat and Milk Derivatives]*, Citric Acid [Preservative]), Dextrose, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate (Maintain Color), Salt. Prepared in Vegetable Oil (Canola Oil, Corn Oil, Soybean Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil with TBHQ and Citric Acid added to preserve freshness), Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent.
*
CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK.
*Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients.
So the beef flavor is not an actual beef product, but it does contain milk.
I avoid most processed food, and try to stick as close to natural as possible. I do not use oil of any kind, and try to avoid anything with articial sweeteners.0 -

Thanks! I knew there were other ickies, too...I've avoided McD's like the plague since going vegan, so it's been a looooong time0 -
I'll throw in my 2 cents for avoiding oil! In Forks Over Knives (the documentary), the health professionals featured are major advocates for avoiding all oils. In prepared vegan products, this is very difficult. In prepared food, I look for expeller pressed oils for minimal impact.
At home, I don't use oil at all unless it's a substitute for butter in recipes where going without a butter substitute would ruin the dish. I have found that some veggies, primarly onion, provide their own natural oils when cooked, so using that 1-2 tablespoons of oil in the pan just aren't necessary.
So, I avoid oils.0 -
Oh, and for the love of God, avoid GMOs!0
