retaining water!

Yikes, I woke up this morning with fluid retention for the first time this pregnancy. I can't get my ring off and I'm a whole pound heavier than I was last night. Already drinking about 100 oz of water a day. Not sure what else to do to beat the bloat (other than trying to cut back on the sodium.) Any thoughts? What foods have you found that help with fluid retention?

Water, exercise, and putting my feet up.... honestly, if anyone of these are down I start puffing up. Feet up is the hardest part of me... but if I can sneak in 2 hours a day, it makes a world of difference.

I should have also mentioned comfortable shoes! Even at home I started wearing "indoor" sneakers. Apparently I need more support these days.

They're not attractive, but on days I teach & am therefore on my feet for 7+ hrs, I wear knee high compression socks.

Swimming is supposed to be a big help. Walking is too. But yes, elevate when not active.

Mostly I swell on humid days, and it goes down when I'm in air conditioning or when the humidity drops.

As for food...I gravitate towards watermelon when I feel puffy. Seems to help :)

Compression socks? I keep hearing about them... do they really help? I only have 4 weeks left and I heard that's the swelling gets worse at "the end". (Not sure if I'm considered there yet.)
  • I've had to wear compression stocking just about everyday since I was 24, so I know what you mean. I will try to keep my feet elevated when I can (hard to do with a 2 year old running around.) I think I will give the watermelon a try. I've been staying away from watermelon because of it's high sugar content and glycemic index, but summer is just about over and it's going to become more expensive and harder to find. Thanks.

Celery can also help get rid of excess water.

Yes, they help! The trick is though, you have to put them on really early...before you get moving, and they have to be tight to work. If they go on easily they're too big. I have 2 pharmacists and a nurse in my family and they convinced me to wear them. A few weeks ago I walked 15+ miles then sat in the car for 8 hours... my lower body swelled and I looked like I had elephant legs! Once I remembered to put on my compression socks, the swelling was totally gone in a matter of hours.

Some good advice up there! I also use Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar up to three times per day for water retention, amond other things. It is amazing stuff.

They also taught us to do ankle rotations and a windshield wiper motion with your feet when you are sitting down. It helps get the blood flow and fluids moving in your lower extremeties.

Other than that I plan to just keep working out and putting my feet up when I need to. I battled adema from 20 weeks on with my daughter, but have avoided it so far and am at 33 weeks now. I hope you get some relief!!

I know someone else mentioned it already but last night the midwife that teaches my prenatal yoga class said to get into any body of water. Pool, lake, river etc. She said the swimming and just overall cooling effect of the water will really help with the fluid retention. :)
