Crossfit + lifting?

Hi all--Just wondering if any of you experienced crossfiters also do a progressive lifting program (like StrongLifts or Starting Strength, or similar). I've been doing SL for a while and just tried a crossfit class, which I loved. Just not sure how (or if) I can combine them efficiently. My goal at this point is really to lose fat and gain overall fitness; I'm not striving for particular strength goals. Thanks for input!

I am combining CF (one class) with SL 5X5... kind of..
I have a personal trainer and I'm slowly building into SL at the moment I am doing a few weeks of 12 x 3 with lower weights to get my form up and then I am going to go into SL properly. I think if you listen to your body and not over do it then you can totally do both.. I would start with perhaps 1 crossfit class and 2 lifting sessions a week and see how you get on.0 -
I've heard of people doing both, and that they can and do compliment each other. Maybe talk to the coach(es) at the box you tried out?0

I think it would be very hard to maximize SL while doing Crossfit more than once a week. We almost always do strength elements that would probably lead to you overtraining if you were doing SL.
I guess you could cherry-pick workouts or do it at home, but most of the benefit of CF (in my view) comes from the accountability of doing it with a class.0 -

I would say this makes a lot of sense...
I only do crossfit once per week (partly because it kills me anyway)0 -

We have strength training M-W-F prior to the WOD without fail. M=squats, W=presses, F=deads. We are currently using the Wendler system on an 8 week cycle for 1RM testing. You should ask your box about incorporating Strength training on a regular basis.0 -
we have a competitors class at my box that is for just this purpose. M-Th we follow programming from catalyst athletics. Some people do the WOD early in the morning and come back refreshed later in the day to do the heavy lifts, and others do the WOD then go straight into the heavy lifting. I am the latter.
I'm also considering joining my university's powerlifting team for some extra work/fun/experience. Every box is different, as is every person.
Just starting out, I made massive gains in strength without any extra programming. They're called "noob" gains... Now, almost 4 years in, I have to really step it up if I want to stay ahead of the pack with PR's and their "noob gains".
Most definitely talk to your coach, but I really believe if you take a couple of months to get used to crossfit and THEN supplement extra training in say, 3 or 4 months down the road, you won't over-exert yourself and you will still see some great gains.0 -
Thanks so much for all of your great input. I do think adding crossfit to the mix would make it hard to progress with stronglifts (I already need 2 days between sessions to recover fully), so I may just switch over to crossfit for a while and see how I like it.0

This is what I did. Did SL for about 3 months and was getting bored and decided to change it up. I'm learning much more about the Olympic lifts than I ever did doing SL, which is cool0 -

We do exactly this at my box and I have been through two testing weeks so far, my 1 RM for squats went from 85 lbs to 135 lbs, so I'm thinking I like this system! We also have an optional oly lifting class once a week just to work on one specific movement (last week was squat snatches, we spent an hour on them)0 -
So, after my first *real* Crossfit class today--after doing SL yesterday--I think it's pretty clear I can't do both, at least not until I'm better conditioned/used to CF. I benched yesterday for SL, and ended up benching again during the OL part of the CF class. And doing 100 burpees and god knows how many pushups on tired arms was no fun! I was thinking I'd do CF twice a week and a full-body lifting routine once a week, and that may work--but I think I'll wait a bit to get into that. I don't want to overdo it and end up hurting myself. It was great having the coach there to help me with my bench form--lifting on my own made it way too easy to go up in weight without perfect form.0

Yeah, I think it would be pretty difficult to stay with a proper lifting routine while doing CrossFit, given that the very nature of CrossFit WODs is the unpredictable nature. I'm sure your trainers have emphasized the value of rest when it comes to lifting so you don't want to work the same muscle groups two days in a row. Good luck!0 -
I do power lifting 3 times a week and crossfit 3 times a week. You ever seen a 250 lb. guy do muscle ups? lol
My goal is to become the biggest, strongest guy in the CF masters division and still whoop @ss in the cardio part of it.
Do you alternate, or do them on the same day? And, have to admit I don't know what a muscle up is? But I'm sure I'd be duly impressed!0 -
muscle ups are the goal of crossfit lol .. amazingly epic!!
i do crossfit on wed, fri and sat n barbel lifting on tue n thursday.. n starting to see some amazing results in the gym and on myself.. love the combo!!0
