Is there such thing as losing too fast?

Hi everyone! I just starting following the CTL program and the weight just seems to be melting off. This is wonderful but I'm worried that its happening too quickly. I'm only doing 2 walks a week and trying to focus on just getting the food right. I lose about 1-2 pounds per day and I even had a "cheat" weekend when I was staying with friends and wasn't able to follow the plan.

I love that this is working but starting to think that the weight will come back or the losing will completely stop. Do I need to worry about muscle tone? Is it time to amp up the workouts?

I've lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks. Is this too fast or did my metabolism just get a major boost and this will level out?

After my first couple of weeks where I only lost 1-2 lbs... I had about a month where I was loosing almost a pound a day. Not as fast as you, but much faster than expected. All I can say is weight loss is a cyclical thing. Sometimes it comes off really easy, other times you are fighting the scale. Perhaps your weight loss is largly water retention, and by eating healthier you are letting go of the excess pounds that way?

In any case, If you are not hungry, and are eating the quantities that Chris recommends, I wouldn't change anything there. I would, however keep on top of the exercise... at minimum doing what Chris recommends in the book. Are you using the first book, or the second one? I found that for me, body resistant workouts were fabulous, and really helped my muscle tone. In all honestly I didn't do the exercises much in the CTL book... but I did go to Jazzercise 2-4x a week and focused on attending the "circuit" classes where we would do more weight lifting (smaller weights lots of reps) for several minutes at a time, in between cardio sessions.

Hope this helps.. and congratz on the weight loss!!

"Too Fast" is relative to the individual. If you weigh 150 lbs and lose 15% of your body weight in two weeks, there would be some cause for concern. If you're considerably heavier, like I am, then it's not such a big deal. Similarly, if you are near the beginning of your diet, your body is changing in other ways that cause inflated weight loss numbers. You lose a lot of the water that your body is holding onto, along with other processes that begin to work more efficiently with healthier eating. It should level out and be somewhat predictable based on your level of activity. Your entire journey will be an uphill battle against diminishing returns. The more you lose the harder you have to work to lose more. As you get lighter, you burn less calories naturally (BMR), and as your level of fitness improves the harder you have to work to burn extra calories. The battle is worth it.
  • Thank you! I'll just sit back and enjoy it while it lasts. It does feel good to go shopping through my "put away clothes" that I haven't worn in a couple years. Best of luck to you both!
