New to the Group

Hi, I'm new to the group and hoping to get some insight from people facing a similar situation. Seems like a supportive group!

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 8 years ago and was on the pill since then as treatment. My husband and I decided we're ready to start TTC so I've been off the pill for about 5 weeks. I've always been warned that I could have trouble conceiving, so we're crossing our fingers. I didn't get my cycle when I should have, so I'm hoping it will regulate itself soon. Prior to being diagnosed, I never had a regular cycle, so I guess I'm not surprised. Anyone else have that issue?

Dr said that if there's nothing in 3 months, I could go on Metformin. Sounds like it has some side effects that I'm hoping to avoid if possible. Other than that, I'm trying to get to a normal body weight. I lost about 5 lbs when I stopped taking BC and I'm trying to keep that going. Currently about 145 and 5'4, down from 155.

Thanks for reading :)

  • Welcome to the group! I almost never have a cycle on my own even on Metformin. It's pretty common among us PCOS gals. Maybe your body is just trying to reset everything after being on BC. Hopefully that's the case!

As far as Metformin side effects go, I've heard some people do have major issues with gastrointestinal problems. I didn't have any trouble with it partially because my doc prescribed me the extended release metformin and told me to take one a day for a week and then bump up to two for a week and so on until I was at my full dosage. Make sure you take it with food too. The only issue I ever had with it was when I was off of it for a few days for surgery and then just went back to taking my normal dose...big mistake!

Hope that helps. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the reply! It's still early on, so we'll see what happens!
  • Good luck! I was one who has always had a cycle on my own but prety sure mine was always anovulatory cycle. I even had a regular cycle would come every 40 days. Metformin did bring my cycle to 32 day cycle, and now the past 4 cycles I have been on clomid and that brought my cycle to every 28 days.

Be prepared for it take awhile and don't be afraid to vent and talk to people it's an emotional processess when you have issues getting pregnant especially if you are around people who don't and seems like everyone is pregnant.

Other piece of advise is if you feel that you need more specialized help don't be afraid to ask for it. Find out from your insurance company if you need referals to go to endrocronologists, or fertility specialists or not if you don't need a referal go to one if you feel you need more help than your regular DR can provide.

    Again GOOD LUCK!
