Never mind the UCI Worlds, we NEED a MFP Worlds...

I was just musing on the subject of Cycling Challenges... what do we do after the Vuelta finishes....

We REALLY aught to do something for "the worlds" - a "matched pair" of Road and TT challenges ??

UCI "Words Week" is 22nd-29th September - so, just a week after the Vuelta ends...

I was thinking of the following...

For the "Time Trial"

Submit a 16.09km ride, GPS Logged and timed.

Altitude End of route MUST be no more than 20m lower than Beginning Altitude (So 10 mile descents from the top of a pass in the Alps / Rockies etc are not allowable)

Route may be as "nett uphill" as you wish.

All rides MUST be ridden solo and non-motor-paced (you're on your honour for this one, as short of insisting on a go-pro on your handlebars, we can't enforce this... but if you cheat, well - you know what you are :frown: )

If you have a local "club 10" course, I STRONGLY advise using this route, as it's probably been worked out on roads that are safer for the purpose.

For the "Road Race"

Pretty much the same as the "Classics Challenge" really - just go out on the appointed day and ride you're little socks off!

So - that's my half-baked ideas so far - please, please give me some feedback and suggestions as to how to improve it (or potential pitfalls you can see for either (especially the TT, as it's pretty much a new thing - we've shaken the bugs out of the "road race" format over the "Classics Challenge" format.

Also - I was thinking that both events should also contribute to the "points" system in the Classics Challenge - again - I'm open to suggestions on this.

I like the TT idea - already have a route in mind (pancake flat & straight) but I think it's not quite 16km so need to think of a little plan that will work the best :glasses:

RR is equally good to me
  • I have my TT route. but if it doesn't jive well with training plan, I'm not committing to it.

This sounds like fun! I think I might have the route but would have to do out and back to get the 16 Km... is that kosher?

An "out and back" is actually the most traditional of all the timetrials - for a start it equalises the effect of the wind - tailwind out is a headwind back or vice-versa. It also, if starts and finishes at the same spot is essentially "climbing neutral" as well. Normally, in the UK at least, the best TT courses have the "turn in the road" as a traffic roundabout rather than a "dead stop 180 in mid-traffic"

If you do have to do the dead-stop bit, my only advice would be to try and make it on an extremely quiet road - last thing you want is to flog yourself senseless for 8k, only to loose 2 minutes waiting for a gap in traffic!

    I'm in!

There goes my chance of the TT arc-en-ciel then :grumble:

(unless we could borrow that trandem the Goodies had, and I got to ride in the middle, with Fabian on the Front and Tony as the Stoker)

It's OK, you can come and hang out with us Groundlings...it's more fun than being up in the rareified air of the podium. Plus we have beer.

Oh yeah, I'm going to try this as well, won't be pretty but I found a spot and someone has to be last, right?

Not sure what the schedule is with this one, sadly next week I have a major distraction with moving house on the Friday ... so that's out for me, lots of packing stuff up on the Sunday .... again not much chance of a ride and imagine it'll be hit and miss for the week in general so I suppose I'm out of the reckoning for this one sadly :/ It has got me thinking about the time trial side of things at least and have one prepped for a bash when ever the urge takes me.

Date range is in the logo - pick whichever day suits for each one - so I fully expect everyone to submit the "road race" entry on the last day, picking the longest SINGLE ride they do... I'm sort of assuming that people will probably not want to submit their TT as being the same as their road-race - Hopefully I'll get some rules sorted out and on here before Tomorrow evening.
  • Count me in - I wish that it started this Saturday when I have some time to really ride but I will figure something out - very doubtful I will be able to come close to the podium on the RR since I just don't have time during the week for more than about two and a half hours of riding and Saturdays are not usually an option either. As for the TT, I believe I have some options

Sounds really cool. Never really considered a TT before. Trying to find a route where there are no traffic lights for 10 miles. Think I've got one, but need to check it out this weekend.

Yes. Was thinking of Park Springs near Barnsley. Fairly flat and the wind is only usually against you in one direction.

Yep got that it's during the date times shown, just not familiar with the format, I'll see what the details are and then see if I can fit it in, I'm not one for doing something half hearted, as it stands it's highly unlikely I'll be able to do anything more then a basic 15 miler (if that) on Sun 21st, Thurs 26th - Sat 27th and I'm at the Cycle show on the Sunday 28th, I'm hoping to have recovered for a decent ride on this Sat but that's outside the scope of the dates shown. Maybe I could just take part in the TT an/or fit in a nice long ride between the Mon-Wed but then I'm under pressure to help sort **** out for the move.

The Barnsley Road Club's "club 10" runs around there IIRC... Vaguely remember riding a couple of their "open 10's" back in the day...

OK - the challenge discussion and entry threads are now active, guess we don't need the "shall we try this damned fool idea thread..."
