artificial sweeteners

I was reading an article the other day that was talking about the fall of diet coke, and how drinking diet sodas, and other artificial sweeteners can actually make us gain weight. As a diabetic I use splenda as a staple in cooking and baking so I can enjoy some of the same things without a risk to my sugars. The article says that the sweeteners confuse your brain and you end up eating extra trying to reach a certain response, and it in the end causes weight gain.
so I figured It might be an interesting topic in a room full of dieters.
I for one have no interest in giving up my diet soda, because I love soda, and I cannot drink regular soda cause I get sick (diabetes) but I do not use the cheap scary sweeteners (yes there is a difference) and I do use them in moderation. Cutting my sugar with half splenda when baking.
I also don't believe in using things that are all labeled fat free and diet, as they often use lots of other chemicals (and sugars) to make them taste better. 1 tablespoon of full yummy sour cream goes way further then 2 tablespoons of the fat free stuff!

While I still Jones for a Diet Mountain Dew on occasion, I can no longer drink carbonated beverages so I don't. We do still drink some aspartame sweetened drink mixes for flavor, but mostly I drink coffee and water.
Splenda I have a reaction to, so we got rid of all of it and haven't bought it again. With diabetes on the line, I can certainly understand the need you have, but I have come to the conclusion that in most things I'd rather have cane based sugar than other sweeteners. I'm not going to get in the pushing match of which is right and wrong. As long as I concentrate on keeping my calories in control I figure I can have the real deal and enjoy the flavors. It may have taken surgery, but I am learning moderation.0 -
I use Splenda I need a little sweet sometimes tea and coffee or cool aid as far as the brain giving me signals I don’t care what “ they” say if “they” knew so .>?>“:>? much then know one would be over weight. Splenda helps me stay in control by letting me have a little sweat, instead of eating a gallon of ice cream…. if it isn’t broke don’t fix it!
And I think if you over due anything its not good for you .... 2 cents worth0 -
I don't typically go for 'diet' sodas or anything artificially sweetened (unless I'm in a position where it's the only option). But that's just my personal preference - I don't like the way they taste, and I'd rather just allot the necessary calories and have the real thing. I don't keep soda or anything other than water, coffee, and tea in my house in the first place, so when I do have it it's a treat and I enjoy it.0

I love carbonated beverages but not the added sugar and things, so I got myself a sodastream and so far I love it! I make my own syrups, except cola, when I'm jonesing I get the diet that they make as a pre-made mix. I have sort of been trying to stay away from artificial sweeteners, I still use splenda in my coffee and tea because I like them very sweet. I use a lot of agave nectar or unrefined cane sugar when making my syrups, and cut the recipes by more than half the sugar.
I have noticed that there are currently more and more articles about artificial sweeteners and the dangers thereof; I don't know how much is true and how much is like the 'eat butter/don't eat butter' argument. I personally am trying to follow the 'fresher is better' rule, and the 'if I don't know what it is I try to avoid it' rule. Less processed is better!0 -
It's interesting I used to drink a lot less soda when I had the full sugar and I had to consider the sugar content but now that I drink diet I drink so much of it! I am working towards cutting them down but I just can't get into the water! Like I hate it and all the added flavors are artificially sweetened, though I believe a lot less so then the diet soda!
I will keep plugging away at this! As for the butter no butter debate butter is way yummier! I recently switched from margarine to real cream butter and I find I use less and I can pronounce all the ingrediants! Yum!0 -

I switched to real butter too. SO yummy, and you don't need much. I use unsalted because of my high blood pressure and it's creamy awesomeness. Since I'm not eating bread right now I really don't use much, unless I put a little on rice or baked sweet taters.0
