Errm

OK so I have loosely been following 5x5 and for some reason I have literally only just noticed that there's only 1x5 of DL. I have been doing 5x5 :blushing: :noway:

Is this terrible, as in could I be harming/injuring myself? Why is it only 1x5?

I'm a bit alarmed at how dumb I've been not to have noticed this and am now a bit worried about what I've been doing.

Help...

Don't worry about it. At the beginning, deadlifts are light enough to where you can recover even if you do them in sets across. The reason it's not trained in sets across at heavy weights is because it's one of the most stressful lifts for your nervous system. It involves so many muscles and such an intense effort that training it in many sets is too hard to recover from. Some advanced lifters don't even train it every week, let alone every other lifting session.

Thank you for your quick response. Oh my goodness, that might explain why I feel wiped out and even had some dizziness on occasion. Well at least I know now, thank you!!

I did the same thing... mostly out of stubbornness. I was all like "this is easy I wanna do 5 sets instead", that quickly changed as my weight got heavier.

    YAY I'm not alone!
  • No worries. Just start doing 1x5 on deadlifts from now on.

I accidentally started this way too...now that's it's too heavy to do 5x5 but I still WANT to do 5x5 I do progressive load up to my max. Which ends up pretty much being 2 warm-up sets and 3 good sets. :) This was an idea the wonderful ladies here suggested to me and it's working well! Actually, progressive load has helped me fall in love with squats again!!

Yep, there are a lot of mistakes you can get away with at lighter weights :) wrong number of reps/sets, bad form, and not taking enough rest or eating enough. Most of these are no longer options as the weights get heavier if you want to continue making progress.

Do you guys have access to an app called liftbook? Or for iPhone there is a good stronglifts app.
