Road Trips!

So, where did you all ride to this summer? What was your favorite road/trip/person you met/rally? Did you see anything interesting along the way?
In other words, when you are on your deathbed, what will you remember about the 2013 riding season?
I'll start!
We rode to Northern California & Southern Oregon: did the Redwood Run, saw the Pacific coast for the first time for either of us, saw the Redwoods, camped in the Cascades and & got to enjoy the rainforest. But man was the coast ever cold! Coldest summer vacation I've ever had.
We also re-did both of our bikes cosmetically. My red bike got a custom black paint job with a black widow theme. My old man's bike went from pearl white tins to sunglo red tins. I kept walking over to get on the old man's bike all summer because it was red like mine used to be

That sounds like an awesome trip!
My travels this year have taken me to all corners of my state (Minnesota), Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois. Overall my mileage is down because winter held out so damn long this year, but still a good year.0 -
Stayed pretty close to home this summer. Rode to the Southern Oregon Coast in June and the Northern Washington Coast in July.
Probably going to do the Redwood Run next summer, though.0 -
I took a few short trips around the Southeast, but a hand surgery and a slow recovery process kept the bike parked for several weeks. I did, last weekend, take a couple days and meet some friends in West Virginia and did some riding there. We found some really nice roads to ride, great scenery, and enjoyed looking into and visiting historic sites throughout the area.
The bike got a few upgrades. New seat , Leo Vinci exhaust system, changed the windscreen, other small odds and ends.
I did not, unfortunately, get my vintage Norton sorted out and on the road as I had planned this summer.
Oh well, no big deal, I was needing a winter project anyway.0 -
Ractrev & RoadDog, you both live in beautiful parts of the country, so riding close to home is still awesome riding!
RoadDog, we might have crossed paths in Oregon. Small world.
Ractrev, what was the best road you were on?
dsl01, I used to live near West Virginia and it is such beautiful country there. Glad you got to see it! What sights did you see?
My favorite road this year was from Garberville, California to Shelter Cove, California. It had some Redwood forest, some open land (all of which smelled like pot crops), a climb up a few thousand feet and then back down to the ocean, and loads of twisties. Challenging road with beautiful scenery!
Maybe the most memorable thing was the pot. All of my time in California and most of my time in Oregon, I just kept smelling pot everywhere. Very annoying since I don't smoke it any more. I live in Colorado where it's legal, and I don't smell it that much around here.0 -
lol on the pot smell!
I love the river roads on the Mississippi. And almost anything in Northern Wisconson and Michigans Upper Pennensula.
My trip down into the Ozarks this year was awesome.
I would love to travel to both coasts on the bike someday. There is so much riding to do all over the country, one could never get tired of it. A couple weeks ago one of my friends asked me if I would be interested in making the ride to Alaska next summer. I'm in if we can make it work!0 -

We met up and stayed in Matewan, WV. Certianly in the middle of nowhere, but we ran some roads and saw scenery all through the hills and hollows around there that was just awesome.
We're goin' back there, for sure.
Aside from the fantastic stretches of asphalt, It was cool to check out the coal mining and Hatfield-McCoy feud history associated with the surrounding area. (Google 1920 Matewan Massacre, as example. The bullet holes from that gunfight are still showing in the old buildings walls). We stopped along the way and checked out some Hatfield family sites as well.
Nice trip.0
