Re: The Sorry State of Moderation in This Group...

Well, hi there!
Remember me? I used to be the moderator here...
Okay...technically, I still am a moderator here...I just haven't been doing it much this past week.
So far the MFP administration has been mum about granting me Administrator privileges to replace our beloved founder, Alana, who has disappeared into the Florida Everglades. I know you all join me in wishing her safe travels, life balance, and good health for her and her young family.
But that still leaves us with an administration problem.
So...
I propose we migrate to a new group; one where we can all stay together and continue on our path AND where the administration work can get done and volunteers can help moderate.
Here, I can't even appoint someone to help when things like Real Life get in the way of my MFP duties.
I remain enthusiastic about Our Group. I remain committed to Our Cause. I remain dedicated to Making Change.
It's just that I am heading into my busiest time to the year and I want to make sure that you have all the support you deserve and to make sure we have a fun and safe place to gather, share, and vent.
So...let's discuss our options below.

I have been wondering about this. I see by my friends list Alana hasn't checked in for a month now.
This is an inherent problem I see in MFP groups. If the creator leaves, the rest of the group just founders. At least Alana granted you some rights so you can do some things.
I would go along with a move. I would suggest we give several people at least some admin rights so we could possibly even rotate through and keep things going, or at list pinning/unpinning threads, when IRL gets after some of us.
If we jump, I say we post a thread telling anyone who checks on us sometimes where we have gone so we can be more easily found.
Or, we limp along as we are, hope Alana comes back and cleans up. I don't know if you have attempted to contact MFP to see if the group could be moved, or if this is something they don't do. I can see both sides of why they would be reluctant to do so, or why they might be willing to save a growing group (of shrinking people!)
How is that for wishy-washy? Am I ready for politics yet? (NEVER!!!)0 -
I am all for a multi-admin multi-mod group! Spread the love (and the work) around a little...
And to answer your question, I have had no reply from the larger MFP uber-admin about giving me the keys...so that the duties here could be shared out.0 -
If you do another group, I def want in. I maybe struggling but I'm hanging in there and I love this group. We're all AWESOME:drinker:0

I understand that MFP can take more than a week to respond to emails...(Not suprising, when you think about it...)
I sent the first one last week and a second one today.
Why don't we set an October 15th deadline to hear from MFP, and plan on a November 1st migration if they can't help?
That gives us lots of time to get the word out to everybody and accumulate some volunteer mods and admins.
We are NOT going to get locked out of a second home!0 -
I have been thinking about this for a little while now... Mark has a lot on his plate being the only moderator for the group. And I would'nt mind helping out a little from time to time, as I'm sure a lot of you would'nt mind helping out also So keep me posted about the move, I wanna stay with all my awesome friends:bigsmile:0

I will gladly follow if we move to another group, but since I am hit and miss in my logging in I will not volunteer to moderate at this time Cary is a busy busy girl! I just want us all to stick together to stick to it!0

Where you lead, I will follow.
No, but seriously, if MFP is reluctant to hand over this group to you, then I do think that it would be beneficial for all if we are able to migrate to a new group where responsibility can be shared instead of resting solely on Marks' shoulders. I love this group and everyone in it, and I would hate to see it fall by the wayside because of our sole moderator becoming too overwhelmed by all of the RL and MFP duties he is responsible for.
I think that setting a date of the 15th to get answers and then a November 1st migration makes sense and is more than enough time for MFP to get back to you and for us to gather ourselves in preparation for the move.0 -
Sounds good Mark, you know I am a mostly dutiful poster and that I would help any way I can! I believe in a wholistic approach where community is important!
Real life has a funny way of interrupting our fantasies... Like my fantasy of being thin!0 -
Mark, You know what I have going on IRL with my mother. However, I am on here daily to at least log and probably post something. I'd be willing to be an alternate moderator.
I would suggest anyone willing or wanting to pick up some of this join Malia and I by letting Mark know of your interest.
Mark, do you prefer this through messages, or do you want posts on this thread?
Also, now would seem to be a good time to let Mark know about any changes you might want, or things you think really should stay from our initial burst of creation. Things have been slowing down, the excitement of finding and building the group is kind of leveling off. This is normal in the lifecycle of such cyber groups. What do we need to do to keep this a successful and vibrant group? How can we help ourselves and others like us?
For our larger lurking community - I know that you are more comfortable reading and I hope you gain as much good from it as we do from posting. However, now would be a great time to break your silence and let us know if we are meeting your needs. It amazes me that in about 3 months we went from just a handful of people to over 150 group members the last time I looked. If you are getting something positive, let Mark know in some way.
I can't say it any better than Al Green: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COiIC3A0ROM0 -
I could probably pitch in once in a while too.0

Count me in for some mod duty too. Life is very busy right now, but it's busy for all of us. I'll do as much as I can, and I'll let you know if I can't.0

i wouldn't be a good moderator, but i sure do want to stay in the group. i love this group, you are all great people.0

Every time I think things have settled down, another wave of work washes over my bow.
Such is the nature of my craft--becalmed or lashed to the wheel in a tempest of urgent client phone calls.
And, seeing as I hate working hard in the darkest days of winter, it is best to earn now, before the weather gets here..
Not that bad weather impacts my ability to work, I just want to go away somewhere nice and be NOT working when it arrives.
Thank you EVERYBODY for playing so nice while we sort things out.0
